Land Development Services (LDS) is the steward of the county's land development and building construction codes and regulations, and its staff members embrace their essential role as "first preventers." Every day, through careful review, permitting and inspection of site and building construction, our staff protect the health, safety, welfare, and environment for those who live in, work in, and visit Fairfax County. Our department also serves as the gateway to much of the county's economic development, reviewing over 30,000 building and site plan submissions, issuing nearly 70,000 building permits, and conducting over 220,000 building and site inspections each year. Position Duties:

  • Provides administrative and technical support to Land Development Services (LDS).
  • Staffs various customer service counters, including greeting and directing customers and answering telephone and email inquiries.
  • Processes mail and other correspondence; making copies of requested documents. Scans documents; maintaining electronic and paper filing systems.
  • Provides coordination support to staff in responding to site and building permit applications, plan and waiver submissions, complaints and violations, and site inspection scheduling (both permitted and unpermitted construction activities).
  • Provides administrative support to staff in document formatting and proofreading, preparation of documents, and other clerical support functions.
  • Serves as the Clerk to the Chesapeake Bay Preservation Ordinance Exception Review Committee (ERC).
  • Provides training support and program manager support to include student tacking and training requirements for building and site-related requirements.
  • Serves as the administrative support backup for the Joint Training Academy (JTA).
  • Performs other administrative tasks as needed, other duties as assigned.

Note: The assigned functional areas of responsibility include general administrative support and customer service.

Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience and training equivalent to high school graduation and two years of experience providing administrative support in the assigned functional area(s).

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs will still be subject to the weekly testing requirement. Vaccinated employees and employees with a medical or religious exemption will complete the attestation online on their first day of employment or shortly thereafter.

PREFERRED QUALIFICATIONS:
  • Strong verbal and written communication and interpersonal skills.
  • Proficient in Microsoft Word, Microsoft Excel or Microsoft Visio software, with the ability to create and manage reports/forms.
  • Working knowledge of software and databases (e.g., Construction Complaint Database, etc.).
  • Experience assisting customers and paraprofessional staff in a fast-paced, customer service-oriented environment.
  • Experience documenting internal or external customer service processes in written procedures and flowcharts.
  • Experience working with confidential and sensitive documents.
  • Demonstrated customer service experience responding to phone calls, emails, walk-ins, customer inquiries and complaints from citizens, builders, developers, and engineers regarding technical matters.
  • Extensive research of technical documents and records

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to bend, squat, and twist upper body to maneuver in workstation; and the ability to operate keyboard driven equipment. Visual acuity to read data on computer monitor. Ability to stand, stoop and bend from up to an hour and to lift moderately heavy objects such as boxes of files or large construction plan sets. Ability to move tables and chairs.
