Sr. Director, Strategic Communications

We are seeking a Senior Director of Strategic Communications who will lead the strategy and execution of Communications at the Carey Business School, including Media Relations, Content Management, Internal Communications, Reputation Management and Events, Social Media, Crisis Management, and Public Affairs.

Reporting to the Associate Dean for Global Marketing and Communications (MarComm), a successful candidate will develop and articulate the core messages / story of the Johns Hopkins Carey Business School to various global constituents and manage the School's messaging to both external and internal stakeholders. The role is an essential component to advance Carey's reputation as a leading business school that shapes leaders who seize opportunities to create lasting commercial and societal value.

In this role, the Sr. Director of Strategic Communications will have direct responsibility for the development and execution of a communications strategy that drives national and local media relations, raises Carey Business School's public profile and increase brand awareness. They will own the use of owned media asset, all social channels, to amplify the reach of the school's core messages while building the school's external reputation. In addition, this role will oversee all internal and crisis communication efforts.

Operating in a complex environment, this individual will work collegially and effectively in partnership with stakeholders across Carey as well as the central University Communications team, and other schools and divisions. The Sr. Director of Strategic Communications will work closely with the Sr. Director of Integrated Digital Marketing to support the priorities and strategic vision of the School.

Specific Duties & Responsibilities:

Media Relations

• Lead media relations to significantly increase Carey Business School's share of voice and coverage in top‐tier media outlets.

• Develop a proactive media relations strategy and execution plan to capitalize on Johns Hopkins Carey Business School's strong reputation and multiple areas of expertise.

• Deepen the Carey Business School's relationships in international, national and local media.

• Lead promotion of faculty research to external audiences.

Content Management

• Expand the use of digital analytics to evaluate and refine the school's content creation strategies and practices.

• Lead content calendar strategy (i.e., when and how to use our stories and which platforms should we tell those stories on).

Internal/External Communications

• Lead team in creation of strategic, impactful, motivating and memorable Dean's speeches, remarks, emails, town halls, etc.

Reputation Management & Events

• Lead key school-wide initiatives driven by Associate Dean, MarComm and the Dean's office.

• Lead sourcing of wide range of speakers that align with the goals of the school (e.g., Distinguished Speaker Series).

Owned Social Media

• Lead Social Media strategy and execution.

• Manage social owned media team member and assets to support Carey Business School's strategic messaging goals and to further its earned media strategies.

Core Messages

• Develop a comprehensive school strategy story by constituent (e.g., Alums, Current Students, Prospective Students, Faculty, Partners, etc.).

• Develop and execute against an external communications plan - story telling via printed materials, panels, speaking, public appearances, media (e.g., NPR), etc.

• Lead annual messaging strategy and execution for Carey, the Dean and Management Council across all key constituents.

• Conceptualize, write, and edit key communications.

Leadership

• Serve as a key member of the MarComm leadership team and assist the Associate Dean in the refinement and execution of the strategic communications plan for the organization.

• Represent the office and the Associate Dean, MarComm as necessary at University initiatives, meetings, and events.

• Oversee Communications team in day-to-day Communications function including Carey Narrative and Core Messages, Internal Communications, External Communications, Media Relations, School Publications, Public Affairs, Crisis Management and functionally - writing, editing, messaging.

Minimum Qualifications (Mandatory):

• Master's Degree in Communications, Journalism, or related field.

• At least 8 years of communications, public relations and/or media relations experience, preferably managing a diverse team of professionals.

• Additional experience may substitute for required education, to the extent permitted by the JHU equivalency formula.*

* JHU Equivalency Formula: 30 undergraduate degree credits (semester hours) or 18 graduate degree credits may substitute for one year of experience. Additional related experience may substitute for required education on the same basis. For jobs where equivalency is permitted, up to two years of non-related college course work may be applied towards the total minimum education/experience required for the respective job.

Preferred Qualifications:

• Experience in higher education is a plus.

• Experience with oversight to crisis communications preferred.

• Understanding of the issues facing higher education today and a passion for the mission of a world‐class research institution.

• Experience as a direct spokesperson to the media and experience leading media training for stakeholders.

• Experience collaborating on content used for external digital advertising.

• Experience leading communications framework and governance where channels and newsletters are competing to the overlapping audiences.

• Ability to work strategically and do hands-on execution.

• Proven leadership to include motivating and development of others, recommend solutions, and managing non-direct reports; must possess the ability to drive change and results.

• Ability to influence and lead complex and integral teams of internal and external stakeholders, to meet project deliverables and business results.

• Excellent oral, written, and interpersonal communication skills; possess the ability to deal effectively with a broad spectrum of professionals and stakeholders.

• Proven client relation skills.

• Must work collegially and collaboratively with other Carey staff, internal partners and external vendors; outstanding interpersonal skills required.

• Ability to multi-task and produce under pressure of multiple and conflicting deadlines.

• Must be autonomous and able to self-manage, work independently and manage individual and direct report priorities.

Additional Knowledge, Skills & Abilities:

• Strong media relations background, demonstrating leadership in both a strategic and tactical setting.

• Able to leverage a deep list of media contacts, both local and national.

• Strong writing and editing skills are essential.

• Mastery of the analytical tools used to determine the effectiveness of issues and reputation management programs - and an ability to communicate the ROI of such work to leadership.

• Exceptional interpersonal skills, with the ability to articulate controversial or complicated concepts clearly and concisely and the ability to make public presentations before a wide variety of audiences.

• Ability and willingness to keep abreast of the latest developments in communications technology and to integrate them into the unit's work.

• Demonstrated success as a manager and leader.

• Ability to distill essential details when conceptualizing storylines and engaging media.

• Ability to thrive in a fast‐paced organization, and to manage multiple complex projects and initiatives simultaneously.

• A level of experience and confidence to build credibility and collaborate with the senior School and University leadership.

• Excellent project management skills.

Supervisory Responsibility:

• Four direct reports (Comms Director, Reputation Manager, Social Media Specialist, Content Manager and two indirect reports (writers).
