Duties

As an Architect or Engineer, you will:
  • Review, coordinate, and maintain design documents for a variety of projects funded through the National Gallery of Art's (NGA) Master Facilities Plan, the NGA's Ongoing Renovation program, and other private fund sources. Ensure that associated design and construction issues such as: Preservation, accessibility, collections conservation, maintaining operations during renovations, and regulatory code requirements are adequately addressed.
  • Review the design work for general conformance with all Gallery requirements and all stated and required building codes, and federal government regulations and procedures. Activities include planning, programming, design, analysis, estimating, and preparation of contract documents. Drawing preparation may involve utilizing a Computer-Aided Design (CAD) system.
  • Develop, analyze and maintain a variety of files, financial reports, and project requests. Provides office administrative support and records management.
  • Serve in a liaison capacity for the Office of Architecture and Engineering. Represent the Gallery and is the day-to-day liaison with design consultants and affected Gallery offices and departments for any Office of Architecture and Engineering (AAE) project.

Qualifications

Candidates must meet the Qualification Standards Handbook requirements for the GS-804-9/11; GS-808-9/11; GS-810-9/11; GS-830-9/11; GS-850-9/11.

For the GS-9 position: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-7 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-7 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector in a developmental capacity performing assignments such as building design or construction project management support, program and office administrative/financial tracking support, as a liaison to Government and contractor personnel, and producing technical documents using AutoCAD.

For the GS-11 position: Your resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-9 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector. In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-9 grade level or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing duties such as: 1) Using concepts, principles, and practices in engineering or architecture to enable the incumbent to serve proficiently in multiple areas of consultation, design, and construction; 2) Using computer applications such as AutoCAD, word processing, spreadsheet, or presentation to perform a variety of project related tasks, including producing technical documents, reviewing project schedules and budgets, maintaining project records, and developing related presentations and reports; and 3) Working with and communicating project information to other government professionals, client representatives of various backgrounds and experience bases, contractor personnel, and others as necessary.

  • Must have coordinated design and/or construction projects in an architecturally significant building, or similar educational or cultural institution.
  • Working knowledge of building codes, design standards and practices and sufficient experience necessary to execute projects through the concept, design, contract documents, and construction phases.
  • Ability to develop and utilize management systems related to scheduling, computer aided design and databases, project tracking, records, and financial/cost analysis.
  • Must have excellent communication skills, verbal and written; and must be able to conduct meetings and produce effective and concise written documents.

  • Must meet the OPM requirements related to education and experience for the appropriate professional series indicated, including but not limited to a professional degree from an accredited college or university in the field of architecture and the requisite amount of professional experience in the respective discipline. Must have vision correctable to 20/20. Must have hearing correctible to within applicable OSHA standards. With accommodation, must be able to maneuver independently around construction sites, up to 100% of a workday. Must have earned a Bachelor's or higher degree in architecture, engineering, (mechanical, civil, fire protection, electrical, or architectural engineering), or a related field, which included courses in structural technology, properties of materials and methods of construction, and environmental control systems.

    "Experience" refers to paid and unpaid experience. Examples of qualifying unpaid experience may include: volunteer work done through National Service programs (such as Peace Corps and AmeriCorps); as well as work for other community-based philanthropic and social organizations. Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills; and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

    VACCINE REQUIREMENT:
