Immigration SpecialistThe George Mason University, Office of International Programs and Services (OIPS) is seeking an enthusiastic and energetic individual for an Immigration Specialist position. Responsibilities:Complete the daily tasks of safeguarding confidential information, balancing multiple priorities, and maintaining a strong orientation to service;Handle administrative functions underpinning the regulatory service mission of the office;Provide support to the Student and Exchange Visitor Information System (SEVIS) Coordinator, International Advisors and the Leadership Team;Serve as an F-1 Designated School Official and a J-1 Alternate Responsible Officer;Process document requests and matriculations;Respond to inquiries by phone and e-mail;Coordinate with students, faculty and administrators on regulatory matters;Staff the front desk on an as-needed basis; andPerform other tasks, as assigned.Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree; or an equivalent combination of education, training, and experience;Must have excellent work habits, including reliability, timeliness, ability to work collaboratively with colleagues, strong organizational skills, and the ability to balance multiple priorities and meet deadlines under pressure;Strong oral/written communication skills with particular emphasis on explaining complex concepts to individuals who have limited proficiency in English. Ability to work effectively in a fast-paced environment, and attention to detail are essential;Ability to research and interpret federal regulations and use the regulations to make decisions related to student status. Reviews documents and other work and makes corrections;Must effectively serve students/clients with diverse work styles and preferences and have the ability to provide support to individuals who may be angry or upset;Must be able to work a non-standard schedule and/or overtime hours occasionally when the workload is high; andFederal law requires U.S. citizenship or permanent residence in order to serve as a Designated School Official and/or an Alternate Responsible Officer.Preferred Qualifications:Knowledge of F-1 and J-1 nonimmigrant regulations is beneficial;Experience in the culture-crossing process and/or an understanding of the dynamics of cultural adjustment;Knowledge of word processing and spreadsheet software and MS Teams and Zoom collaboration tools;Several years of administrative or professional experience is beneficial; preferred is client/customer service, regulatory compliance and/or higher education experience; andExperience working in an International Student Office and/or as a Designated School Official.
