Job Description

The Washington Post has an opening for a deputy managing editor for news operations, a role that is key to the smooth functioning of our newsroom. The successful candidate will work closely with Executive Editor Sally Buzbee, the managing editors and department heads on budgeting, newsroom standards and administrative issues. This is a top role in our leadership structure and a masthead position.

We are looking for an expansive thinker who can strategize about our trajectory for growth and help chart our course. This person will be a liaison between News and many other parts of The Post, including our colleagues in Finance, Human Resources, Legal and Security. This new deputy managing editor will guide the newsroom's budgeting process, work with the director of news operations and oversee a new standards team. Under the leadership of the deputy managing editor for news operations, two standards editors will work to thoroughly update our policies and help us maintain our ambitions and values in an ever-changing media landscape.

The successful candidate will have extensive experience leading journalists, fostering collaboration, developing strategic plans and managing budgets.

The qualities needed for success in this role include superb organizational and communications skills and a deep dedication to The Post's mission. The addition of this role is part of a series of changes to the newsroom leadership structure that will help support our talented journalists and prepare us for the future as we continue to aggressively grow. As we do in filling all our leadership positions, we seek individuals with competitive zeal, a strong commitment to diversity and inclusion, and an empathetic, collaborative approach to management.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we return to normal operations, it will not be eligible for remote work.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

Candidates should upload a résumé and cover letter to our jobs portal by Nov. 22. All materials can be uploaded to the same field. The cover letter should be addressed to Executive Editor Sally Buzbee, to whom this position will report.
