The Community Health Protection Bureau in the Department of Human Services (DHS) is seeking a Public Health Nurse (PHN). The PHN will support programs aimed at preventing and controlling the spread of communicable diseases in the community: Disease Surveillance and Investigation, Tuberculosis (TB), and Vulnerable Populations. The primary responsibilities include investigating suspected or confirmed cases of illness, providing disease prevention and control measures, conducting newcomer health assessments, and delivering case management to clients with TB. This position will serve a culturally and linguistically diverse population.

Responsibilities include:

  • Providing nursing services in Chest Clinic, including one evening weekly;
  • Managing active and latent TB cases;
  • Conducting health intakes for refugees and asylees;
  • Monitoring and investigating cases of reportable communicable diseases;
  • Documenting all investigations and recommendations given in state and local electronic databases;
  • Leading outbreak investigations including contact follow-up and epidemiological links;
  • Performing community-based outreach and public education activities; and
  • Participating in activities associated with emergency planning and response as a member of Public Health Emergency Response, including, but not limited to, participation in public health vaccination clinics.

  • Bachelor's degree in Nursing;
  • One (1) year of full-time experience as a Registered Nurse (RN); and
  • Licensed to work as a Registered Nurse in the state of Virginia*
*If eligible from another state, candidate will be allowed 60 days from hire to obtain license.

Substitution: Education may be substituted by additional directly related experience on a year for year basis.

Desirable: Preference may be given to candidates with a Master's degree in a related field and experience in one or more of the following:

  • Clinical epidemiology or communicable diseases;
  • Using the Virginia Department of Health databases;
  • Bilingual ability in English/Spanish; and
  • Providing clinical TB services.

Special Requirements
Applicant must possess, or obtain by the time of appointment, a valid driver license, or have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties at locations other than the primary worksite. If the applicant possesses or acquires a license, the applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of their official state/district driving record.

It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history.
