Position Information
Arlington County's Office of Communications and Public Engagement (CAPE) is seeking an experienced Communications Specialist to provide support to CAPE's Communications and Outreach team.

CAPE is responsible for overall communication and management for Arlington County Government and has the following goals:
  • Informing and educating the public about new and existing programs, services and projects;
  • Developing strategic and, integrated communications for ACG initiatives; and
  • Marketing, customer communication and public engagement.
Specific duties include:
  • Developing materials and information to inform the public about new and existing programs, services and projects;
  • Writing and/or editing press releases, news articles, and executive talking points;
  • Developing and managing materials and information to inform the public about new and existing programs, services and projects;
  • Developing and creating digital content for Facebook, Twitter, NextDoor and other online platforms;
  • Developing concise, easily understood content and graphics for fact sheets, infographics, digital signage boards, flyers, posters, videos, presentations, board reports, and other materials;
  • Responding to and triaging media requests;
  • Developing webpages and content for the County's website;
  • Leading logistics and coordination for press and/or other community engagement events;
  • Using Census data to develop and craft proactive communication and outreach strategies and content to multilingual communities;
  • Developing, implementing and facilitating online 'live' events that offers opportunities for community engagement;
  • Reporting on website traffic/analytics and usage data to gauge interest on County services and programs.
Selection Criteria
Minimum:
Bachelor's degree in Communications, Public Relations, Marketing, Public Information, Business/Public Administration or related field plus significant experience in the communications field which included the following:
  • Synthesizing complex information and developing simplified reports, summaries and using a variety of communication mediums such as fact sheets, graphics, infographics, and other materials;
  • Developing communications and materials for a government agency; and
  • Leveraging social media platforms, including Facebook, Twitter and NextDoor.

Substitution: Additional qualifying experience may substitute for the education requirement on a year-for-year basis. A Master's Degree may substitute for up to one year of experience.

Desirable: Preference will be given to applicants with experience with one or more of the following:
  • OpenCities or similar content management system, for creating websites and/or blogging;
  • Gov Delivery or other CRM tools
  • Spanish Language
  • Microsoft SharePoint
  • Experience responding to media and/or other community based stakeholders
  • Using Venngage, Canva or similar tool for creating website and social media graphics
  • Social media monitoring and analytics tools, such as HootSuite, Google Analytics and Siteimprove; and/or
  • Experience working in a communications function with a local government.
