SUITABILITY, CLEARANCE & REQUIREMENTS: A background investigation will be required for all new hires. Appointment will be subject to the applicant's successful completion of a background investigation and favorable adjudication. The background investigation process conducted by the Bureau of Engraving and Printing is very thorough. Qualifications
You must meet the following requirements by the closing date of this announcement.
Specialized experience for the GS-11 is one year of experience at the GS-9 level or equivalent, that is directly related to the position as listed in this announcement and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Specialized experience to qualify at the GS-11 level is defined as:
3 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a Ph.D. degree or Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree
OR
You may qualify by a combination of experience and education. To combine education and experience, the total percentage of experience at the required grade level compared to the requirement, as well as the percentage of completed education compared to the requirement must equal at least 100 percent. Only graduate level education in excess of the first 36 semester hours (54 quarter hours) may be combined to be considered for qualifying education.
Specialized experience for the GS-9 is one year of experience at the GS-7 level or equivalent, that is directly related to the position as listed in this announcement and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Specialized experience to qualify at the GS-9 level is defined as:
2 years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to a master's degree or master's or equivalent graduate degree
OR
You may qualify on a combination of experience and education. To combine education and experience, the total percentage of experience at the required grade level compared to the requirement, as well as the percentage of completed education compared to the requirement must equal at least 100 percent. Only graduate level education in excess of the first 18 semester hours (27 quarter hours) may be combined to be considered for qualifying education.
Specialized experience for the GS-7 is one year of experience at the GS-5 level or equivalent, that is directly related to the position as listed in this announcement and which has equipped the candidate with the particular knowledge, skills, and abilities to successfully perform the duties of the position.
Specialized experience to qualify at the GS-7 level is defined as:
1 year of graduate-level education or superior academic achievement
OR
You may qualify on a combination of education and experience. To combine education and experience, the total percentage of experience at the required grade level compared to the requirement, as well as the percentage of completed education compared to the requirement must equal at least 100 percent.
Education
Individual Occupational Requirements:
A. Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
OR
B. Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.
The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. If you are qualifying based on foreign education, you must submit proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency. Refer to the OPM instructions .

The following are the duties of this position at the GS-12. If you are selected at a lower grade level, you will have the opportunity to learn to perform all these duties, and will receive training to help you grow in this position.
As a Physical Scientist (Research and Development Analyst), you will:
- Work with Project Managers and team members from different areas of expertise to determine appropriate work and test procedures for materials such as currency new design, inks, papers, and special materials.
- Serve as a team member to ensure that the proper analyses are selected and performed.
- Prepare test plans outlining the scope, objectives, and test procedures to be used for assigned tests (chemical, physical, or printing) and their impact and consequences in currency manufacture processes and the quality of currency products.
- Develop the most effective and efficient design of test considering the capabilities of test facilities and the time, funds, and manpower available. Maintain contact with stakeholders, customers and others concerned with assigned project to determine the exact test requirements and persuade the customer to, as necessary, make adjustments to project or to justify additional requirements.
