Job Description

The Washington Post is looking for an experienced, innovative and strategic editor to help manage the Metro team. This is a key leadership position at The Post. In addition to coverage of the District, Maryland and Virginia, The Post's nationwide coverage of education, transportation, social issues (such as gender, religion, housing and poverty) and many other topics come from this staff.

We need an editor adept at running coverage, holding institutions to account and collaborating across many departments to ensure our stories are told in the smartest ways possible.

The position requires an ability to juggle scores of things at once and then turn on a dime to focus on the most important stories of the day.

We need a strategic thinker to help balance Metro's mission of reaching our local, national and global audience. We also need an empathetic manager who understands that journalists are multi-dimensional people.

A strong track record of producing sophisticated, urgent and vibrant coverage across several topic areas and platforms is essential.

This position is based in our Washington newsroom. Once we return to normal operations, it will not be eligible for remote work.

The Post strives to provide its readers with high-quality, trustworthy news and information while constantly innovating. That mission is best served by a diverse, multi-generational workforce with varied life experiences and perspectives. All cultures and backgrounds are welcomed.

Candidates should upload a résumé, three clips (as pdfs) you've edited or written and a cover letter outlining how you hope to improve Local's coverage to our jobs portal by Jan. 21. All materials can be uploaded to the same field. The cover letter should be addressed to Local Editor Mike Semel and Managing Editors Steven Ginsberg, Tracy Grant and Krissah Thompson.
