This is a Internship position under FAA's Gateways Program. The PMO provides program and acquisition management for the FAA infrastructure programs that transform, modernize and sustain the National Airspace System (NAS). The focus of the PMO is engineering, acquisition and second-level engineering software maintenance for the FAA's automation systems. The goal is for the student trainee to become familiar with programs, projects and functions of the organization.

The student in this position will be responsible for assisting in the research and development of programs establishing and maintaining the efficient, productive, and cost-effective operation of the National Airspace System (NAS). He/she performs a mixture of routine and somewhat complex tasks and receives detailed instructions from a manager, team leader, or more experienced employee.

Trainees are fully immersed in teams working on mission-critical projects while also engaging in meaningful learning and development opportunities. The position offers applied experience, exposure to leaders within the PMO, as well as exposure to networking opportunities and professional skills development.

He/she will possess knowledge of basic administrative, program management, and communication skills sufficient to engage in program management, analysis and control for various groups within the PMO. Contacts are primarily internal to one organizational unit. With a manager, project/program manager, team leader, or more experienced employee to share basic information and to receive guidance in some areas. May have limited contacts with external customers. The incumbent will also be required to communicate information to various audiences through technical reports and notes.

Assists manager and other employees in day-to-day operations. Established policies/procedures provide detailed guidance for almost all assignments with little or no room for discretion.
Responsibilities may include, assisting manager, team lead and/or more experience employee in:

• Researching, identifying, and programing requirements and problems.
• Planning, preparing and conducting analysis.
• Developing presentations to highlight key points.
• Consolidating various data sources into a cohesive set of data.
• Developing a process for importing, storing and computing information using MS Office applications.
• Gathering user requirements and deriving a solution to meet the mission's needs.

The following tasks may also be part of the process improvement/documentation efforts, for which the student will assist a manager, team lead or more experience employee:

• Development of budget projections for organizational support and capabilities for specific projects and programs.
• Perform requirements gathering and cataloging to identify consolidation and improvement opportunities.
• Organize processes in a logical and methodical manner.
• Document as-is processes and create process maps.
• Draft to-be processes and maps.

APPOINTMENT - If selected, your appointment may not exceed a total of 120 days after graduation.

AGREEMENT : All participants must sign a written Gateways Internship Agreement with the FAA that clearly identifies expectations of the appointment such as duties, length of appointment, work schedule, training, mentorship, etc.

CONVERSION : Although it is not guaranteed, an intern may be converted from the Internship program to a permanent excepted service position without further competition after successful completion of the educational program (awarding of degree), completion of a minimum of 640 hours of career- related work, required training, mentorship, and other requirements in accordance with the intern's participant agreement.

TERMINATION : Participation in this program may be terminated at any time.
