Duties

As a Physical Security Specialist within the Office of Management Services, some of your specific duties will include:
  • Conducting recurring security assessments of agency owned/leased facilities to determine facility security level (FSL) and identify threats, vulnerabilities and impact of loss/consequences and develop security countermeasures to mitigate risk.
  • Providing comprehensive, clear, and concise reports to document fact-based findings and recommending corrective action based on security assessments.
  • Providing technical guidance and assistance to Facility Managers on physical protection measures and security systems necessary to safeguard personnel, resources, and facilities.
  • Assisting Section Chief with implementing physical security education and training program for employees, contractors, and other affiliates.
  • Assisting Section Chief with managing the maintenance contracts pertaining to the National Center security protection systems.
Physical Demands: Much of the work is sedentary and is usually accomplished while the employee is comfortably seated at a desk or table. However, occasional travel for onsite survey work may require prolonged walking over flat and uneven surfaces, working in confined spaces, crouching, bending, crawling, standing and climbing. Some survey work may require the wearing of personal protective equipment such as, but not limited to, respiratory protection in the form of a negative pressure filtration mask, self-contained breathing apparatus, chemical protective suit and hood, fire retardant clothing and other forms of protective equipment.

Work Environment: Work is typically performed in an adequately lighted and climate-controlled office. However, hazards inherent to field, industrial activity and survey work may be encountered by the incumbent. Onsite survey work may require exposure to dust, fumes, hazardous material, and changing temperatures.

    • This position is subject to both pre-employment and random drug testing as a condition of employment. Applicants will not be appointed to the position if a verified positive drug test is received.
    • You will be required to operate a government-owned or -leased vehicle in the performance of your official duties. Applicants for this position must meet the following requirements: (1) possess a valid State license, and (2) possess a safe driving record. If selected, you will be required to provide proof of a valid State license & a copy of your driving record.
    • Taking and passing a pre-employment medical examination at Federal expense is required due to the physical demands of this job.
    • Because this position requires travel for official business, the selectee will be required to apply for a charge card within 30 calendar days of appointment.     Qualifications

    For GS-12 :

    Applicants must have one year of appropriate specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-11 level in the Federal service that is in or related to public affairs and that equipped the applicant with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform successfully the duties of the position.

    Examples of such experience may include: 1) developing and maintaining a security program; 2) developing, implementing, and maintaining methods to enhance physical protection; 3) conducting facility assessments in accordance with Interagency Security Committee (ISC) guidelines and making recommendations on implementation of security measures; 4) providing the overall Facility Security Level (FSL) rating; 5) preparing and finalizing the writeup of facility security assessments; 6) performing contract management; and 7) administering an armed contract guard force. Assignments at this level are planned and carried out independently, resolving most conflicts that arise, coordinating the work with others as necessary, relating new work situations to precedent ones, extending or modifying existing techniques, and interpreting and applying program policy in terms of established objectives.
