Director, Diversity & Inclusion and Student AffairsThe George Mason University, Antonin Scalia Law School invites applications for the Director, Diversity & Inclusion and Student Affairs position. About the Position: This is a new position designed to support and promote, through multiple avenues, students' overall experience at the law school and their academic success. This position will support students throughout the law school - from orientation to graduation. While responsibilities include projects and initiatives designed to benefit the entire student population, the role has critical responsibilities focused on students from underrepresented groups in the legal profession. Key qualifications for this position include a passion for working with students, and for promoting and supporting diversity and inclusion efforts. This position reports to the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs.Responsibilities:Diversity and InclusionServe as the primary point of contact (providing support, advising, and resource information) for JD, LLM and JM students on issues concerning diversity and inclusion;Support and engage law school student organizations serving underrepresented student populations, including assisting with event planning, educational and community programming, and organizational issues; Develop, manage, and evaluate the law school programming (including speaker series, recognition events, etc.), oversee the law school's diversity & inclusion certificate program, and make curricular recommendations to increase awareness and demonstrate the importance of diversity and inclusion, both during law school and generally in the legal profession;Oversee and manage law school's diversity and inclusion budget and ensure compliance with University policies. Annually assess use of funds and develop budget requests to further short and long-term diversity and inclusion initiatives at the law school;Serve on the Dean's DEI Advisory Board and collaborate with faculty and senior administrators on diversity and inclusion matters. Create short and long-term strategic plans in relation to the law school's diversity and inclusion efforts and assess effectiveness of such plans;Collaborate with and promote programming and services of existing GMU resources, including the Center for Culture, Equity, and Empowerment, Office of Diversity, Inclusion, and Multicultural Education, LGBTQ+ Resources Center, Office of Disability Services, Center for the Advancement of Well-Being, Student Health Services, Counseling and Psychological Services, Student Support and Advocacy Center;Coordinate student / alumni mentor programs and facilitate other connections between students with similar backgrounds / experiences; and Maintain diversity and inclusion resources available on the law school's website. Student AffairsAssist Assistant Dean of Student Affairs with student matters as needed and provide individual academic counseling to JD students;Assist students with formation (or re-formation) of student organizations, including providing advice on organizational documents and leadership transitions; Develop and oversee first-year JD mentorship program. Hire, train, establish goals and objectives for, and supervise approximately 20 student wage and non-student wage workers;With the Assistant Dean of Student Affairs, annually assess and develop department's budget to identify areas requiring investment to meet short and long-term priorities of the department;Work collaboratively with other law school offices to plan and supervise first-year JD student orientation and JD transfer orientation, law school graduation, and annual awards/recognition programs; Partner with the university's Disability Services office and the law school's Records Office on management and implementation of in-class and exam accommodations at the law school. Assess existing procedures annually and provide strategic plan on how to improve implementation at the law school and better serve accommodated students; andDevelop and implement initiatives regarding student health and well-being (involving university, community, and law school resources) and student education funding opportunities (including university and law school programs), and management of the law school's outside scholarship and writing competition databases. Required Qualifications:JD, LLM, or a graduate degree in an area related to student affairs/student administration or diversity studies; A minimum of two years relevant experience related to higher education or law school administration or other comparable and demonstrable work experience; Commitment to promoting and supporting goals related to diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI);Experience working with individuals from diverse and traditionally underrepresented backgrounds;Excellent oral and written communication skills, organizational skills, and the ability to manage multiple projects simultaneously;Strong critical thinking skills, sound decision making, and objectivity; andAbility to work occasional evening and weekend hours. Preferred Qualifications:Experience building and/or supporting initiatives that promote diversity, equity, inclusion and belonging; andExperience with academic or other student advising.
