Position Information
The Department of Human Services (DHS) is hiring a Physician Assistant in the Client Services Entry Bureau's Emergency Services section. Emergency Services provide round-the-clock, mandated, immediate assistance to individuals experiencing acute psychiatric/psychological crisis. Emergency Services serves to relieve the immediate distress of these individuals, prevent them from harming themselves or others, and make appropriate referrals for both medical and non-medical interventions. Emergency Services operates out of the Crisis Intervention Center (CIC), but also provides mobile crisis services.

The Physician's Assistant will provide direct medical services to clients experiencing behavioral health crises including spending a majority of the time in the field providing support to the Co-Responder program, working with the Fire Department staff to assist with medical triage; providing medical clearance, monitoring, and treatment; and serving as a medical care liaison with DHS staff, other personnel and community agencies.

Responsibilities include:
  • Providing medical support to behavioral health crisis stabilization and mobile response testing and treatment;
  • Serving as a community integrative medical care liaison, specifically supporting behavioral health crisis stabilization and mobile response-medical triage and clearance protocols, point of care testing and treatment;
  • Providing medical support for the Co-Responder program, through either on scene response or through telehealth;
  • Completing necessary documentation including Quality Assurance of Emergency Medical Services transports from the CIC for medical necessity;
  • Developing trainings and relationships with community partners and other county entities to further increase the capabilities and awareness of services available at the CIC; and
  • Maintaining situational awareness for opportunities to improve and expand the Co-Responder program.

Selection Criteria
  • Completion of requirements for graduation from an accredited four-year university with a bachelor's degree;
  • A master's degree from an accredited Physician Assistant program;
  • Certification as a Physician Assistant (PA-C) by the National Commission on Certification of Physician Assistants;
  • Licensure from the Virginia State Board of Medicine as a Physician Assistant within 60 days of hire; and
  • One year of full-time experience as a certified Physician Assistant.
  • Experience working in Emergency Services, crisis responses, or similar environment as a Physician Assistant.

Special Requirements
A pre-employment criminal records check will be conducted. It may include checks of the following: criminal record, driving record, education, professional licensure, and credit history. You may be required to sign a release authorizing the County to obtain your background information.

Applicant must possess, or obtain by time of appointment, a valid motor vehicle operator's license from the applicant's place of residence or the applicant must have the ability and willingness to use alternative methods of transportation to perform assigned duties and responsibilities at locations other than the primary work site. The applicant must authorize Arlington County to obtain, or the applicant must provide, a copy of the applicant's official state/district driving record. Any offer of employment may be contingent upon a favorable review of the applicant's driving record.
