Full Time

As a Nondestructive Tester (Title 32), WG-3705-10, you will perform the below duties:

(1) Inspects turbine engine components, parts and sub assemblies by use of ultrasonic and eddy current inspection techniques. Typical inspections are made to identify, locate and measure surface and subsurface flaws, corrosion
and defects in joined surfaces; to determine the integrity of welds; to make precision dimensional and volume measurements; and to determine the conductivity of materials.
(2) Performs liquid penetrant and magnetic particle inspections to detect and interpret the relevancy of flaws in metal parts. Parts are numerous and varied, are of ferrous and non ferrous metals, and consist of surface or near surface discontinuities in the metal, e.g., fatigue cracks, welding overlap, cold shut, or surface cracks which may stem from internal flaws.
(3) Operates radiographic equipment (x-ray) to examine a variety of parts with varied configuration characteristics and inspection locations. Determines inspection requirements and area to be x-rayed. Determines number of
radiographs needed, orientation of equipment relative to item being radiographed, tube to film distance, exposure time and other factors needed to obtain exposure of proper density and contrast.
(4) Performs scheduled inspection and maintenance of equipment in the Machine Shop, e.g., magnetic particle, dye penetrant, ultrasonic, eddy current, x-ray and x-ray film processing equipment.
(5) May notify the Allied Trades Supervisor, Quality Assurance or Facility Supervisor of abnormal defects for which no repair or inspection instructions are available or reason for parts failure is unknown.
(6) May be required to prepare engine oil and other fluid samples for spectrometric oil analysis and evaluate test results. Calibrates equipment as required. Forwards daily calibration results to appropriate authority. Runs
samples from engines checking prescribed elements. Based on findings recommends components to inspect. Runs periodic correlation tests and forwards results to appropriate authority.
(7) Performs other duties as assigned.

  • Most work is performed indoors in a well-lighted and ventilated shop type environment. Incumbent may occasionally be required to perform duties outdoors and therefore be subjected to heat and cold extremes.
  • The incumbent is subject to radiological and chemical hazards.
  • This position is covered by the Domestic Violence Misdemeanor Amendment (30 Sep 96) of the Gun Control Act (Lautenberg Amendment) of 1968. An individual convicted of a qualifying crime of domestic violence may not perform the duties of this position.

This is an excepted service position that requires membership in a compatible military assignment in the DC Air National Guard.

Minimum Requirements: Must possess experience or training which demonstrates ability to set up and operate test equipment, use test apparatus to apply tests to material or products, record readings, observe and record established reactions, and classify according to defined categories.

SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE: Experience or training in using ultrasonic and/or eddy current inspection techniques to observe, measure, and detect discontinuities and flaws. Experience classifying test results, identifying material deficiencies and recommending courses of action for items of equipment. Experience recommending engine components to be inspected and forwarding results to the appropriate authority. Experience performing scheduled inspections of testing equipment ensuring compliance with established technical regulations and procedures.
