Responsibilities: 

Under general supervision, performs technical work in the field of landscape maintenance, ornamental horticulture, and/or landscape construction. Leads and provides training for landscape maintenance projects.
 

Performs landscaping activities such as planning and layout of projects, planting and cultivating shrubs, trees, turf and flowers, and pesticide applications.  Inspects and monitors the conditions of the landscape to assess horticultural or environmental problems.  Prepares reports and cost estimates.  Advises and instructs grounds personnel in erosion control, mowing practices, fertilization, pruning, irrigation and applications of pesticides to fields and landscape.  Performs insect and disease identification, soil evaluation, and other evaluative techniques. Determines and takes appropriate remedial action.  Ensures adequate supplies, materials and equipment are available for assigned projects.  Ensures the operational safety and readiness of equipment; cleans equipment and performs routine maintenance and repairs.  Operates landscaping equipment such as aerifiers sprayers, forklifts, backhoes, power and hand tools. Cleans project area upon completion of work.

Qualifications: 

Bachelor’s degree in horticulture, agronomy or related field required.  A minimum two (2) years’ experience in landscape construction, agronomy, or landscape maintenance work.  Except for qualifications established by law, additional related experience and formal education in which one has gained the knowledge, skills, and abilities required for full performance of the work of the job class may be substituted for the education or experience requirement on a year-for-year basis with 30 college credits being equivalent to one year of experience. Comprehensive knowledge of the practices and techniques of landscape construction, agronomy, and/or landscape maintenance; of plant life as applied to ornamental horticulture; of plant materials, planting techniques, erosion control, and pesticides. Working knowledge of landscape design and construction work. Skill in reading and interpreting landscape architectural plans, specifications, proposal forms and estimates; in the use and maintenance of tools and equipment of the trade; in making field investigations. Ability to plan and program assigned projects; to organize and lead the work of assigned personnel; to communicate effectively both orally and in writing; to prepare comprehensive reports; to work in, on, around, over and under fixed equipment and machinery; to work from ladders and lifts; to work at heights up to 35 feet; to manipulate heavy equipment, tools, and supplies and/or exert force up to 50 lbs.; to concurrently manipulate multiple controls on machinery and equipment; to work in hazardous or irritating environments, confined spaces, and adverse weather and temperature conditions; to wear and work in personal protective equipment.  Candidates selected for employment may be subject to medical inquiries and/or medical examinations to determine ability to perform the job. Valid Maryland Non-commercial Class C, Commercial Driver’s License (CDL) or equivalent driver’s license may be required. If required to obtain a Commercial Driver’s License, employees will be subjected to drug and alcohol education and testing as required under Federal Highway Administration and the State of Maryland regulations. Certification by the Maryland Nurseryman’s Association as a Professional Horticulturist may also be required.

This position is an essential function/employee position. Employees in this classification will be required to report to work or remain at work during inclement weather and/or other campus events or emergencies.  Please be advised, COVID-19 vaccinations will be required for all eligible students, faculty and staff returning to USM institutions this fall.

SALARY:  $37,863- $42,000

Grade:  9
