We are in search of a Culinary Arts Instructor who supports the school’s mission by preparing our adult immigrant students to become productive and civically engaged residents of Washington, DC.  The Culinary Arts Instructor accomplishes this by providing excellent instruction that supports students’ diverse educational backgrounds, learning styles, and English language abilities.  The Instructor is responsible for creating materials specific to the assigned level, selecting class textbooks, designing a class syllabus, and writing daily lesson plans to directly address all student needs.  The Instructor is expected to engage with multiple forms of data, both formal and informal, to help students advance academically.  Additionally, they will be responsible for the management of key data points.   Student tracking forms, daily attendance, student scores, and timecards are examples of administrative responsibilities that extend beyond the time spent teaching in the classroom. 

Responsibilities:

  • The teacher demonstrates various basic methods and advanced techniques in a classroom setting within the Culinary Arts Curriculum 
  • Maintains grade records and student progress reports
  • Collates the class attendance of his/her students daily using the assigned roaster and the SIS Program by the end of each class
  • Fosters and promote teamwork in the classroom 
  • Prepares clear and concise daily lesson plans including objectives, available to supervisors
  • Creates and maintain a positive learning environment for adult learners
  •  Implements classroom policies and procedures
  • Provides for different learning styles and abilities
  • Encourages students’ active participation and regular attendance
  • Monitors and evaluates student performance and modifies instruction accordingly
  • Other related duties as assigned

Qualifications:

  • Minimum professional certification from a technical school/program or Bachelor’s degree in the specialized field or experience in hospitality and culinary management, with a minimum of 3 years of culinary arts experience and at least 1 year of an administrative position (Chef de Cuisine, Sous- Chef, Executive Chef, etc.) or the appropriate combination of education and experience
  • Servsafe certification
  • Demonstrates self-motivation, continual learning, and has initiative
  • Practices professional and effective interpersonal communication skills
  • Able to work independently or with others in a team approach
  • Demonstrate knowledge and competence in both ESL preparation and Adult Education 
  • Must be flexible and able to make adaptations to meet the academic needs of students with different learning skills and challenges 
  • Works comfortably with people from diverse backgrounds
  • Excellent communication skills, be able to explain concepts to others effectively
  • Excellent organizational skills and timely completion of tasks
  • Fluently speak, read, and write in English
  • Knowledge and experience using Windows, Internet Explorer and Microsoft applications including Word, PowerPoint, and Microsoft Outlook
  • Must be able to provide proof of completed Covid-19 vaccination
