AARP's Community, State and National Affairs (CSN) Group includes Government Relations, Programs, Volunteer Engagement, Community Outreach and Advocacy at the federal, state and local levels. The Program Specialist participates in the development and dissemination of communications to attract and engage targeted audiences, with the objective of enhancing awareness and influencing change. Participates in the implementation of communication projects and ensures content aligns with the enterprise brand strategy and brand architecture. Collects and analyzes data to measure communication campaign effectiveness for return-on-investment.

Responsibilities

  • Participates in the planning and implementation of projects to support communications initiatives across business units. Monitors and measures the effectiveness of communications strategies and tactics, making adjustments as needed.
  • Develops and distributes communications content (e.g. press content, web, digital, social and advertising) in support of integrated communications campaigns.
  • Collaborates with colleagues across the enterprise to develop and implement communications strategies and tactics in support of business unit goals.
  • Develops, distributes, and manages internal communication content and tools. Creates and manages e-mail distribution lists, online blogs/communities, and internal social media tools. Implements and manages tools/software for internal communication, collaboration, and knowledge sharing/management. Provides channels for employee feedback and response from leaders, including e-mails, newsletters, and intranet content, etc.
  • Recruits, trains, develops, and deploys volunteers in accordance with organizational goals, aligning volunteers' interests with organizational priorities, supporting volunteer needs and designing opportunities to maximize volunteer engagement in pursuit of the organization's goals.
  • Oversees event entries into Cvent, maintaining quality and compliance within the system and organization. May include entering events, reporting numbers, and interacting with national staff to maintain compliance.
  • Manages and assists with placement of content in Brightspot, Sprinkler, etc,.
  • Provides social media and digital content support for engagement, event outreach and advocacy. Creates content for state staff including, but not limited to, creating/editing videos and motion graphics, designing digital content, posting to social platforms, and supporting state web presence.

Qualifications

  • Completion of a Bachelor's degree in business, communications, public administration, political science, public policy or related discipline, and minimum of 3 years of experience; or an equivalent combination of training and experience related to the duties of the position.
  • Skilled in using the Microsoft 365 software package (Word, Excel and PowerPoint, OneNote).
  • Experience using the MacBook Pro highly desirable.
  • Some knowledge and understanding of the state and local political, social and human services environment is preferred.
  • Must be highly skilled in producing content for social media, including video. Must be experienced with FB, Instagram, Twitter and TikTok.
  • Comfortable working with a diverse staff and volunteers.

Flexible Work Arrangement (FWA)

AARP observes Mondays and Fridays as telecommuting workdays, except for essential functions. Remote work and telecommuting can only be done within the United States and its territories.
