Design Program Management Lead

We are currently seeking a Design Program Management Lead to join our team. We are passionate about keeping our design teams well managed so that they can deliver world-class products that redefine our customers' day-to-day financial activities.

As the Design Program Management Lead for Capital One's Experience Design Operations organization, you will apply your expertise in program, project and change management skills to manage and deliver a portfolio of high-impact initiatives that advance the team agenda and create operational efficiency. You will be responsible for building and managing numerous program management operating rhythms to drive consistency, accountability and transparency around delivery. In this exciting role, you will work with leaders and designers across all lines of business to promote well-managed priorities, and will lead a team that sets the standard for project and change management excellence within the Experience Design organization.

What You'll Do:

You'll be asked to handle a variety of responsibilities, including:

Collaboration & Connection
  • Partnering with Experience Design Operations, Strategy and Engagement teams and Business leaders to identify and prioritize highest leverage initiatives
  • Advocating for prioritization of project and change management rigor grounded in industry best practices
  • Building and maintaining strong working relationships by collaborating with technology, product, and business teams to uncover customer and business needs
  • Oversees program metrics and reporting, in alignment with overall operational routines and risk, cyber, product and tech requirements
  • Driving momentum by keeping the overall work portfolio and team on track
  • Working with partners and teams across various geographies in a hybrid environment - virtual and in-person (ultimately)
  • Connecting with the design community by learning, sharing, and teaching, as well as participating in relevant communities of practice


Leading & Developing Teams
  • Building and leading successful teams by mentoring, coaching, and elevating others
  • Guiding team members in strategy, research, alignment, analysis, process improvement, project and change management
  • Navigating conflict resolution within your team as well as within projects, teams and partner relationships


Discovery, Delivery and Support
  • Partnering with the Experience Operations, Engagement and Strategy teams to evaluate project and change management capability breakdowns and devise improvement opportunities
  • Designing an overarching project intake, prioritization and oversight strategy with streamlined digital and human centered processes
  • Drive projects based on defined priorities, ensure scope of deliverables, timelines and budgets are met, identify risks and issues and mitigate and/or escalate as needed
  • Display strong consulting and collaboration skills to work with partners to understand business problems and focus on bringing issues to resolution, escalating as necessary to meet timelines. Includes clarifying and defining business needs, requirements and use cases.
  • Guiding changes to scope, design, and delivery schedules to meet business needs with available resources
  • Defining a project and change management framework for portfolio, balancing Capital One and industry best practices with the way Design works
  • Devising an project and change management education curriculum to advance the maturity of practice overall within Experience Design
  • Maintaining and providing oversight to a well-managed program management tools and routines owned by the Operations team:
    • Planning and managing budgets, forecasting, and scoping new engagements
    • Identifying and partnering with Operations Portfolio Management lead to manage risks and mitigation plans, as well as compliance and controls within the program management portfolio
    • Reporting on the portfolio of work to stakeholders. This may include reporting on workflow, scope, resourcing, forecasting, and value of delivery
    • Overseeing overall portfolio health and team satisfaction


Basic Qualifications

  • At least 5 years of experience with program or project management
  • At least 3 years of experience with communications and change management
  • At least 4 years of people management experience


Preferred Qualifications

  • Comfortable managing complex cross-channel experiences and stakeholders
  • Comfortable working with Product, Tech, Cyber and Risk partners
  • Experience managing multiple large teams and portfolios of work
  • Experience with Jira, Confluence, Tableau or next generation project management tracking tools
  • Familiarity working with design or creative teams
  • Familiarity with agile principles and/or project management methodologies
