The Clarice Smith Performing Arts Center (The Clarice) at the University of Maryland is a performing arts venue and integrated laboratory dedicated to nurturing arts students, practitioners and scholars as they innovate and collaborate to build the future of the arts through education, engagement and performance. A place where artmaking, research, teaching and audience development come together, The Clarice seeks to be a national leader in leveraging the combined power of the arts, technology and social justice to address what University President Darryll J. Pines has called the grand challenges of our time. As part of the College of Arts and Humanities (ARHU), and an integral component of the campus-wide Arts for All Initiative, The Clarice is home to the University’s performing arts presentation and incubation wing, which cultivates local, regional, national and international artists through touring performances, commissions and residencies in the development of engaged, innovative and cross-disciplinary work. Unique among university performing arts centers, The Clarice’s management team works collaboratively to support and enhance the missions of the building’s resident partners: the School of Music; the School of Theatre, Dance, and Performance Studies; the Michelle Smith Performing Arts Library; and the Maryland-National Capital Park and Planning Commission, while also engaging with all University of Maryland students, the campus community, the surrounding area and the field. Its professional staff of fifty arts administrators—in Artistic Planning, Operations and Finance—report to the Executive Director, who works in close collaboration with the leadership of the academic partners, the College’s Associate Dean for Arts and Programming and the ARHU staff in marketing and development.
