Police IT Support Engineer III

An Overview
Do you enjoy maintaining and troubleshooting computer systems? Do you enjoy working on information technology initiatives? Consider joining the Alexandria Police Department as an IT Support Engineer III, playing an integral role in supporting and maintaining the Police Department’s computer systems. As an IT Support Engineer, you will work closely with various technology-focused Police Department teams and units to enable their day-to-day computer needs and assist with identifying and deploying new technologies.

The IT Support Engineer III will work closely with the Police Department operational units by providing first-level hardware and software support for operational needs. This position works with civilian and sworn officers to maintain, troubleshoot, and support critical Public Safety systems.

What You Should Bring
The ideal candidate should have good knowledge in the theory and practice of troubleshooting information systems and computer networks. The ideal candidate will have experience in a public safety environment. The ideal candidate will have experience configuring, managing and troubleshooting desktop and laptop computers in a Windows environment. The ideal candidate will have experience with installing and troubleshooting printers and other peripherals. The ideal candidate will be able to resolve issues effectively and efficiently while meeting deadlines. The ideal candidate will be able to communicate effectively, both verbally and in writing, with others using non-technical language to explain complex technical subjects. The ideal candidate will be comfortable working in a local government environment within a chain of command.

The Opportunity - Examples of Work
  • Demonstrates an ability to walk through and explain troubleshooting procedures at both a high level as well as in fine detail;
  • Troubleshooting, maintaining and upgrading computer hardware and software;
  • Acts as a help desk point of contact to coordinate and assist users with application questions and issues;
  • Documents and maintains lifecycle of computer hardware (inventory, configuration management, and disposal);
  • Ensures all information related to support requests and troubleshooting procedures is thoroughly documented and considers proactive measures/communications to address broader problems;
  • Assists with configuring, testing, and imaging computers for deployment;
  • Works with vendors and external City departments, when necessary, to implement solutions, assist employees, and resolve problems;
  • Assists with maintaining security through user accounts, permissions and other security products; Assists with planning and carrying out department-wide IT projects;
  • Identifies technology-related security concerns (e.g. malware, phishing, and inappropriate access) and reports them through the proper channels;
  • Performs related work as required.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Four-Year College Degree and three years of relevant, professional experience.

Preferred Qualifications

Four Year College Degree in Information Systems; Four years of progressive responsibilities in IT field; Background with various Windows Server versions; Working knowledge of SharePoint; Experience using Microsoft Configuration Manager; Experience writing technical documentation; Experience with various support ticketing and inventory systems; Related Microsoft or similar certifications; Experience planning and/or managing one or more projects; Experience working with technology in a Public Safety environment; Experience working in a government organization; Working background of command line, vbscript, and/or PowerShell scripting. Background supporting Windows 10 and Office 365.
