Academic Advisor - Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering The George Mason University Department of Electrical and Computer Engineering (ECE), within the College of Engineering and Computing (CEC), is seeking a professional, multi-tasking, customer service driven employee to work with undergraduate students as an Academic Advisor. About the Position:This position will work independently and collaboratively with department and university wide constituents. The position will report to the Academic Advisor and Coordinator for ECE.Responsibilities:The primary responsibility of this position will be to perform academic advising for all current and prospective undergraduate students and reply to general inquiries about undergraduate programs offered by the department. The individual in this position will contribute to the recruitment and retention of students through effective advising and outreach, and will be responsible for facilitating students' education, decision-making and planning. This person will discuss academic interests, make connections to career goals with the student, and provide information on academic policies, procedures and practices, including working through various academic requests, forms and appeals. The individual in this position will represent the department in a professional manner and will act as a resource person regarding the university and department's rules and regulations while serving as a trouble-shooter and problem solver. This person will contribute to Mason's strategic goals of preparing career-ready graduates, while increasing graduation and retention rates. There may be occasional work and recruitment activities needed that are outside of normal business hours, offsite, and/or may be located remotely.Undergraduate Student Advising and Student AffairsDiscuss academic interests, make connections to career goals, and advise students in course selection and registration; Assist students regarding prerequisites, transfer courses, registration and overrides, and general university rules and regulations;Work with students on warning, probation, and returning from suspension to develop student success plans and increase likelihood of degree completion;Ensure that students meet departmental requirements of degree progress;Coordinate the processing of graduation applications with the Office of University Registrar;Develop resources and materials for student advising to be distributed to students;Organize and retain student records, to include advising notes and email exchanges, etc.;Provide administrative support to ECE faculty, staff, and students to support student success;Collaborate with the CEC Office of Undergraduate Student Services and other university wide constituents to support student success;Provide support to prospective students;Participate in group advising during Day and Evening New Student Orientation for freshman and transfer students;Participate in recruitment initiatives and events organized by the department, college and university (Some events may occur outside of normal business hours and/or may occur on weekends and in alternate locations);Serve on committees and other projects as assigned that are related to advising and student support;Stay abreast of ECE undergraduate programs; andStay abreast of University policies and procedures as it relates to advising. Required Qualifications:Bachelor's degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, Counseling; or a combination of education and experience in related field; Some, generally one to three years, professional experience working in a higher education setting;Experience with or demonstrated knowledge in one or more of the following areas: academic advising, success coaching, orientation, disability services, veteran's services, career services, student involvement, and student rights and responsibilities;Prior experience assisting students in a college setting in academic advising/support;Strong working knowledge of transitional issues;Prior experience working to meet deadlines, working accurately and quickly with attention to detail, and being able to manage multiple complex programs and projects simultaneously;Strong commitment to customer service;Conflict resolution skills;Prior experience working with a culturally and ethnically diverse population of students, faculty, and staff;Strong interpersonal skills and professionalism in communicating with faculty, staff, students, visiting students and families, and the general public;Proven ability to work collaboratively; Have comfortability with technology;Prior experience with computer data entry, internet navigation, email, and Microsoft Office suite; andOutstanding verbal and written communication, organizational skills, and outreach skills. Preferred Qualifications:Master's degree in Higher Education, Student Personnel, Counseling or related field;Experience with educational database management systems and customer relationship management systems (CRM); andPrior experience in working with science/engineering students.
