Job Announcement

Coordinates and implements all field activities of the Forest Pest Management Program within assigned areas of Fairfax County. Performs multistep monitoring or management tasks to support program goals in various weather conditions and terrain. Accurately documents field observations using GPS based data collection software and devices. Assists in the preparation of maps and graphics using Geographic Information System (GIS) software. Educates county residents about common forest health issues including forest insect pests and diseases. Responds to county residents’ inquiries regarding forest health issues. Prepares letters, reports and educational materials related to forest health issues. May supervise contract staff, limited term personnel, and volunteers.

Note: The appointee to this position will be required to be available twenty-four hours a day/seven days a week (24/7) to respond to snow, flooding, and other designated emergencies on an as needed basis.

  • Thorough knowledge of urban forestry, forest pest management and arboricultural practices;
  • Thorough knowledge of horticultural and landscape installation practices;
  • Advanced knowledge of Geographic Position Systems and Geographic Information
  • Systems software and the ability to generate maps, charts and associated reports using these technologies;
  • Thorough knowledge of, and the ability to conduct, vegetation and forest pest surveys;
  • Ability to manage long term projects in an effective and efficient manner;
  • Ability to create correspondence, reports and presentations using word processing, spreadsheet software and presentation software;
  • Ability to supervise, train, and provide guidance/counsel to lower level staff;
  • Ability to make presentations to small and medium sized audiences.


Employment Standards

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:
Any combination of education, experience, and training equivalent to the following: (Click on the aforementioned link to learn how Fairfax County interprets equivalencies for “Any combination, experience, and training equivalent to”)
Graduation from an accredited four-year college or university with a degree in urban forestry, forestry, horticulture, environmental science, landscape architecture, agriculture or related field; plus two years of related experience in forestry, arboriculture, or landscape architecture, relating to urban forest management and/or forest pest management.

CERTIFICATIONS AND LICENSES REQUIRED:
  • Valid driver's license.
  • Possession of a valid Certified Arborist certification issued by the International Society of Arboriculture or the ability to obtain same within one year of appointment.
  • Possession of a valid Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services Category 2 or 3A Pesticide Applicator Certification or the ability to obtain same within one year of appointment.

NECESSARY SPECIAL REQUIREMENTS:
The appointee to this position will be required to complete a criminal background check and driving record check to the satisfaction of the employer.

All newly hired employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 (two weeks after the last required dose) as a condition of employment or obtain approval of a medical or religious exemption prior to their start date. Proof of an exemption or vaccination status will be required during the pre-employment onboarding process. New employees who obtain an exemption from the vaccine mandate for medical or sincerely held religious beliefs will still be subject to the weekly testing requirement. Vaccinated employees and employees with a medical or religious exemption will complete the attestation online on their first day of employment or shortly thereafter.

Proficiency with Geographic Information Systems software (ArcGIS) and the ability to generate maps, charts, and associated reports using these technologies. Ability to create correspondence, reports and presentations using word processing, spreadsheet software and presentation software. Ability to make presentations to small and medium sized audiences. Ability to supervise, train, and provide guidance to lower-level staff. Ability to manage long term projects in an effective and efficient manner.

PHYSICAL REQUIREMENTS:
Ability to operate keyboard-driven equipment. Must be able to walk considerable distances in all kinds of terrain. Ability to operate motor vehicle. Ability to lift objects less than 50 pounds. Physically and mentally able to use all applicable personal protective equipment in an outdoor environment; including hardhat, eye protection, hearing protection, safety footwear, long pants, sleeved shirt, and personal fall arrest harness. All duties performed with or without reasonable accommodations.
