Overview The Senior Systems Programmer provides technical leadership, software support and technical guidance in support of the mainframe operating system environment. This position contributes to the implementation and support of hardware, software and operational procedures to enhance and maintain performance, high availability, currency, and capacity for mainframe architecture in support of application and/or business requirements. In addition, this position is responsible for maintaining a high-level perspective of the day-to-day operational aspects of the department. This perspective produces the ability to identify and recommend efficiencies that can be built into existing processes and procedures. These day-to-day tasks include the development and employment of monitoring techniques to maintain a proactive application/systems management approach. Participate in problem solving exercises assisting Technical Services group in identifying root cause, corrective action or future direction to eliminate potential outages. Implements assigned system software to include new releases, corrective fixes, vendor maintenance and customization. Builds plan to integ software changes to maintain the highest level of availability coordinating with Operations and the Change Management groups. Perform research into new functions available from latest software identifying opportunities to improve our environment. Supports software environment providing guidance on the use of systems software to fellow systems programmers, applications programmers, operations and other business users of the mainframe infrastructure. Participates in projects and tasks to upgrade/mig supported hardware to new or replacement equipment. This would include making configuration changes as required, installing software fixes for compatibility, assisting with the implementation planning and change coordination. Monitors the environment to ensure resource utilization is within capacity guidelines. Analyzes the environment to determine customization and or corrective change to ensure we maintain the highest availability and throughput. Identify inefficiencies; communicate to appropriate owner of resource consumption and work to correct inefficiencies through accepted tuning guidelines.Our current need is a contingent worker to support our overall z/OS environment. The successful candidate will have an overarching understanding of all things mainframe including z/OS, TSO, ISPF, the HMC and console administration, systems performance and monitoring. Familiarity with major components such as DB2 and CICS desirable. Knowledge of virtual tape, DFHSM and other storage components is preferred. Knowledge and experience with Performance tuning of z/OS environment including Workload Manager highly desirable. The successful candidate will be able to demonst outstanding problem determination and resolution skills working independently from any vendor as needed.The candidate must have experience in performing the appropriate steps using SMP/E and other tools to apply maintenance, download, install, and upgrade various software products from both IBM and Third Parties, and in providing full support as listed in the general Senior Systems Programming description above. The focus of the role would be to plan, coordinate, and implement maintenance and upgrades for Third Party software to maintain product support. Other responsibilities of a Systems Programmer including mentoring of less experienced staff, expert troubleshooting of performance, product and environmental infrastructure components. Position requires participation as an oncall resource for products and the environment overall. Participation in monthly and bi-annual Disaster Recovery Exercises is required. Off-hours support is required including Critical Situations calls that may any area of the contingent worker's responsibilities.The successful candidate must have a record of transparency, demonst d ability to communicate in both writing and verbally inside and outside the mainframe tech support team to management, applications support, development, and Mainframe Operations teams. Required Skills : z/OS, DB2 and CICS desirable, Knowledge of virtual tape, DFHSM and other storage components is preferred
