The National Association for the Education of Young Children (NAEYC) is seeking a Finance and Accounting Manager. NAEYC is a professional membership organization that works to promote high-quality early learning for all young children, birth through age 8, by connecting early childhood practice, policy, and research. NAEYC advances a diverse, dynamic early childhood profession and supports all who care for, educate, and work on behalf of young children.The Finance and Accounting Manager is responsible for overseeing the day-to-day accounting and finance operations of NAEYC including functional responsibility over accounting/monthly close, accounts payable, accounts receivable, and grants/contracts financial management. This includes (a) maintenance of an adequate system of internal controls to ensure the integrity of NAEYC's financial processing and reporting and prevent and detect misstatements; (b) monitoring that the processing of payments/receipts are done in a timely manner and in accordance with widely adopted practices; (c) managing NAEYC's monthly close process including the reconciliation of the statement of financial position accounts on a monthly basis and managing journal entries; (d) production of periodic financial reports in accordance with the accounting and finance policies and generally accepted accounting principles ("GAAP"); (e) grant reporting and analysis; (f) audit preparation with the goal of high quality and clean audits; (g) budgeting support; (h) enforcement of accounting policies and procedures, (i) improvements to Finance and Accounting workflows and processes, and (j) ad hoc analytical analysis and financial reporting development as needed; and other tasks as assigned. The Finance and Accounting Manager plays a pivotal role in:Ensuring that NAEYC is stewarding well the resources entrusted to it and that it earns, Managing a large flow of transaction volume with quality and accuracy, Enabling optimized resource allocations, and Providing high integrity "always audit ready" financial information to promote sound and strategic decision making.Duties and ResponsibilitiesCharacteristic Duties and Responsibilities Percent of Total Job Manage the monthly close process for the statement of the financial position, as well as key statement of activities accounts and ensure the following is achieved: Accounts are reconciled monthly; any variances are investigated and resolved, and all accounts are maintained in audit ready status; Monthly schedules are reconciled to the general ledger; Monthly financial statements are produced in accordance with internal accounting and finance policies and GAAP by the monthly deadline; and When applicable, schedules provide the necessary information for the audited financial statement footnotes.20%Oversee the financial management of grant and contract awards across their lifecycle performing the following: Design and implement workflow processes and procedures to transform and improve NAEYC's internal financial management for grants and contracts; Monitor the use of awards funds to ensure they are compliant with contractual obligations; Respond to award data requests, including the preparation of data analysis, invoices, and financial reports; Record the monthly indirect costs, revenue recognition, and other entries; Support budget development for new awards, and Prepare monthly reports for management team's review.15%Analyze accounting records, including financial statements and other financial reports to assess accuracy, completeness and conformance to standards defined within the department.15%Manage NAEYC's financial risk by developing and implementing organizational strategies, analyzing market trends and competitors, review and monitor budgets, and developing long-term plans based on robust plans. 10%Develop business relationships with key customers, vendors, and stakeholders to foster continued growth and identifying potential opportunities for generate value-add activities for both parties. 10%Ensure internal processes are compliant with NAEYC's internal policies and procedures and with external laws and regulations, as well as resulting in daily transactions being recorded in a timely manner. Develop and continually improve a system for the maintenance of immaculate financial records and making use of current technologies. 10%Engage in critical and confidential aspects of accounting that might have significant internal effort or minor external effect. 10%Performs other work-related duties as assigned. The omission of specific duties does not preclude the supervisor from assigning duties that are logically related to the position10% Total100%The Finance and Accounting Manager supervises NAEYC's Staff Accountants, currently two team members, and will also serve as a coach and mentor for the rest of the Finance and Accounting team.Desired QualificationsBS in Accounting, or equivalent experience;7+ years of accounting and finance experience;Experience working in and/or familiarity with non-profit accounting required;Must have previous supervisory experience;Comfortable with technology; experience with computerized accounting systems, knowledge of Sage Intacct is a plus Strong Excel skills, and prior association management system experience a plus;Must be comfortable leading both directly and through influence relationships;Must exhibit excellent communications skills written, verbal, listening;Able to partner and communicate effectively with people at all levels of the association and build and empower teams; andProven ability to deliver high quality work under deadlines, integrity, solid judgement, hunger for process improvement.Physical Demands There are specific physical demands that must be met by an employee to successfully perform the essential functions of this job.
