Special Education Teacher*This is an in-person position, remote working is not available*All candidates should be fully vaccinated.Harmony DC Public Charter School is a public charter school located in NE Washington, DC. serving students in Kindergarten through 5th Grade.The mission of Harmony School of Excellence-DC is to prepare students for higher learning in a safe, caring, and collaborative atmosphere through a quality learner-centered educational program with a strong emphasis on science, technology, engineering, and mathematics.POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:o Bachelor's degree from an accredited college or university.o Master's degree and/or teacher certification are preferred.o Teaching experience as a Special Education teacher is preferred.DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES:o Participate in professional development activities and staff meetings as required or assignedo Assist school administration in scheduling classes for SPED instruction.o Assist in the planning and implementation of staff development and in-service programs pertaining to special education.o Monitor SPED students' academic progress that is reflected in the formative and summative evaluations to ensure students meet desired educational goals and use assessment results to coordinate SPED instruction and schedule.o Compile, maintain, submit and file all physical and computerized reports, records, and other documents required by the district, state and federal laws.o Ensure SPED classroom(s) and/or instructional environment is safe, organized and conducive to learning, with accessibility to all students.o Establish and maintain communication, both written and oral, with parents, students, principals, and teachers to keep them informed of student progress.o Collaborate with other professionals to carry out schoolwide instructional or related activities for SPED students and their parents to better educate them on SPED services and programs.o Collaborate with general education teachers to ensure SPED students' instructional needs are being met.o Advocate for SPED students to ensure they have an equitable educational opportunity.o Continually communicate with students on instructional expectations and keep them informed of their progress in meeting those expectations.o Provide SPED instruction if assigned. If the coordinator has a teaching role, comply with the position description of SPED teacher.o Support general education/special education teachers and administrators in the implementation of appropriate strategies to meet the needs of students with disabilities.o Support implementation of accommodations and modifications for students with IEPs in the general education classroom and during Special Education service timeo Ensure implementation of the instructional program which utilizes knowledge of learning styles and modalities and correlates Individuals Education Plans with regular program curriculum guides.o Ensure timely dissemination of modifications, accommodations, and IEPs to the related teachers and personnel and keep related documentationo Plan, develop, implement, and administer programs and services to meet identified needs, including development and implementation of new programs and serviceso Plan, prepare, and facilitate IEP meetings, and serve as a member of the Individual Educational Program Committee.o Participate in placement decisions based on educational, sociological, and physiological data presented to the committee.o Assist regular school personnel in providing an appropriate educational environment for mainstreamed students.o Establish new objectives based on the findings of the evaluation team to be presented as recommendations to the IEP Committee.o Suggest alternative teaching methodso Identify the need for remedial or tutorial assistance to students.o Maintain confidential records of assigned students and complete reports and other evaluations.o Create and maintain Special Education documentation as required by federal, state and district regulationso In coordination with the campus discipline committee, ensure appropriate handling of discipline issues for Special Education students and attend the Discipline Committee meeting for these students.o Perform other duties as assigned.SKILLS AND ABILITIES:o Ability to communicate effectively in both written and oral forms with all levels of management, both internal and external to the district.o Ability to establish and maintain effective working relationships both internal and external to the district.o Ability to organize special programs for the assigned campuses.o Ability to use computer including software, database used by the district, spreadsheet and word processing software, calculator, copy machine and telephone.o Ability to analyze datao Ability to use effective interview techniques, effective public speaking skills, and problem-solving skillsJob Type: Full-timePay: $60,000.00 - $72,000.00 per yearBenefits:401(k)Dental insuranceEmployee assistance programHealth insuranceHealth savings accountLife insuranceVision insuranceSchedule:Monday to FridaySupplemental Pay:Signing bonusCOVID-19 considerations:All students and staff wear masks throughout the day.
