UBC was created to assist Mason executive, academic, and business leadership in identifying and capitalizing on opportunities for bold innovation, turning data into insights, and achieving increased effectiveness & efficiency, all in pursuit of the University's overarching strategic goals.About the Position: The Consultant for University Business Consulting (UBC), reporting to the UBC Director, aids projects and programs that directly support the goals of Mason and the strategic goals of the UBC Office. Projects may include business and strategic planning, data analysis and visualization, financial modeling and budgeting, business process redesign and implementation, policy redesign, implementing new initiatives, and/or conducting quantitative and qualitative analysis on business functions at the university. Responsibilities: The Consultant's responsibilities include executing project work, performing various analyses and creating visualizations, participating in stakeholder engagements, and producing business process reengineering work;The successful candidate performs core consulting-style functions. This is expected to include, but is not limited to, gathering data, developing thoughtful, detail-oriented, and high-quality quantitative and qualitative analyses, such as financial modeling. This position encompasses the creation of mostly error free, clear, and compelling written documents, flow charts, data visualizations, presentations, and/or spreadsheets, and conducts both internal and external benchmarking research. The Consultant is involved in gathering data in a thorough and timely manner, storing and annotating the information for future use, as well as documenting methodology. The consultant's proficiency includes creating models to analyze gathered data through analyses that are complete, data-based, and logical, with data sources clearly referenced and assumptions/caveats clearly and concisely stated. Successful candidates also have the ability to develop core analytical capabilities or model libraries, using advanced statistical and quantitative techniques. Tasks will include employing financial models to develop solutions to financial problems or to assess the financial or capital impact of projects;The consultant assists UBC Directors, Managers, and team members with assigned work, as needed and may lead small projects or sub-tasks of larger projects. In addition, the candidate shows responsiveness to requests for work from UBC leadership and a willingness and ability to complete other duties to support UBC leadership. Responsibilities include providing regular, concise updates to leadership that clearly identify progress, issues, and proposes next steps;The successful candidate develops near-final deliverables on agreed upon timelines for UBC working groups, steering committees, and other key stakeholders across campus, as necessary, as well as produces deliverables that directly answer client questions, incorporates feedback, and addresses client needs; andAnother expectation of the successful candidate is to represent UBC projects and the UBC office with an appropriate level of professionalism at all times in interactions with GMU schools and business units regarding UBC initiatives. Coordinates with UBC leadership regarding communication to GMU schools and business units. Required Qualifications:Undergraduate degree in management consulting, strategic business solutions, data analytics, business process improvement design and implementation, project management, or related field, or equivalent combination of education and experience; Progressive (typically two to five years) experience working at a consulting firm or on consulting projects is required. Similar project work at other organizations will be considered for substitution; Financial modeling, data analysis, and/or budgeting experience;Demonstrated ability to find insight and meaningful conclusions in analyses and project work;Performs independent research and initial analyses with limited oversight from management; Advanced problem solving and analytical (qualitative and quantitative) skills;Experience supporting clients;Exceptional written and oral communication skills are essential; andAdvanced proficiency with MS Office applications is critical, particularly Microsoft Excel (e.g. pivot tables, advanced formulas), Microsoft Word (e.g. creating templates and tables in Word), and Microsoft PowerPoint (e.g. advanced presentation creation skills including importing data, animation, etc.) Preferred Qualifications:Master's degree is preferred, such as MBA, MPA, or other professional degree with a focus on business analytics or process improvement;Experience designing process flows, writing policies and procedures, and interviewing stakeholders;Experience with data visualization techniques/software, such as PowerBI, Tableau, or other dashboarding software;Higher education, healthcare, or not-for-profit experience; andAbility to take direction from leadership on projects and also self-direct work streams as needed to move projects forward on tight timelines.
