Duties

  • Advises management on the Safety and Occupational Health Program.
  • Plan, direct, manage, assign and assist in safety and Occupational Health Program management.
  • Monitor, evaluates and make recommendations on Safety and Occupational Health Programs.
  • Ensure policies are incorporated into the Safety and Occupational Health Program.
  • Implement Safety and Occupational Health Practices.

WRAIR is participating in an alternative personnel system knows as the Personnel Demonstration Project (PDP). The DJ-03 pay band is equivalent to the GS-11 Step 01 to GS-12 to Step 10 level. In keeping with the Demonstration pay fixing policies, employees earning a salary that falls within the pay band equivalent, may not receive an immediate pay increase (promotion) if appointed to this position. Future pay increases within the pay band will be accomplished through the pay for performance management system.

In order to qualify, you must meet the education and/or experience requirements described below. Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community; student; social). You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience. Your resume must clearly describe your relevant experience; if qualifying based on education, your transcripts will be required as part of your application. MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS:

Specialized Experience: One year of specialized experience which includes (1) Management and control of hazardous materials, (2) Enforcing safety-related policies and procedures, and (3) Supporting a safety and occupational health program. This definition of specialized experience is typical of work performed at the next lower grade/level position in the federal service ( DJ-02/GS-09 ).

OR

Degree: Ph.D. or equivalent doctoral degree or 3 full years of progressively higher level graduate education leading to such a degree with a major study in safety or occupational health fields (safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene), or Ph.D or equivalent doctoral degree in other related fields that included or was supplemented by at least 24 semester hours of study from among the following (or closely related) disciplines: safety, occupational health, industrial hygiene, occupational medicine, toxicology, public health, mathematics, physics, chemistry, biological sciences, engineering, and industrial psychology.

OR

Combination of Education and experience: A combination of education and experience may be used to qualify for this position as long as the computed percentage of the requirements is at least 100%. To compute the percentage of the requirements, divide your total months of experience by 12. Then divide the total number of completed graduate semester hours (or equivalent) beyond the second year (total graduate semester hours minus 36) by 18. Add the two percentages.

Time in Grade Requirement: Applicants who have held a General Schedule (GS) position within the last 52 weeks must have 52 weeks of Federal service at the next lower grade or equivalent (GS-09).

Education

Some federal jobs allow you to substitute your education for the required experience in order to qualify. In addition it meeting specialized experience you can qualify if your education and/or experience meets the following: 1 year equivalent to at least the next lower grade level (GS-09).

FOREIGN EDUCATION: If you are using education completed in foreign colleges or universities to meet the qualification requirements, you must show the education credentials have been evaluated by a private organization that specializes in interpretation of foreign education programs and such education has been deemed equivalent to that gained in an accredited U.S. education program; or full credit has been given for the courses at a U.S. accredited college or university.
