Established in 1944 as Midwest Research Institute, MRIGlobal is based in Kansas City, Mo., and operates in nine states and Washington, DC Staff Scientist - Applied Biology & Bioinformatics - Data EngineerThe Applied Biology & Bioinformatics team at MRIGlobal is seeking a Data Engineer to fulfill an open Linux-based system administrator role. The position can be based out of either the Gaithersburg, MD facility, or our Charlottesville, VA location. The position will require occasional travel between the MD and VA facilities. The successful candidate will have experience supporting and/or directing the day-to-day management of a high-performance computing (HPC) cluster used for bioscience or another computational discipline. The successful candidate will maintain multiple HPC environments across two research sites and coordinate their applications to a diverse array of computational biology, genomics, and other data science needs.Minimum Qualifications:B.Sc. / BA and 6+ years of experience, or M.Sc. / MA and 3+ years of experienceRelated experience can include (but not limited to):Downloading, installing, troubleshooting, and maintaining open source code-bases for the purposes of scientific data analysisEstablishing and maintaining multi-user environments on Linux-based HPC clusters, including; security, software-license management, job scheduling, virtual environments, and system administrationDesign and implementation of relational databases and/or the maintenance of a relational database management system (eg, MySQL, Postgres, MariaDB, etc.)Use of cloud-based containerization and/or package management architectures (eg, Kubernetes, Docker, Ruckstack, etc.) for hosting/deploying/executing custom, open-source,and/or commercial software for scientific data-analysis applications.Installation and multi-user management of software applications that support accompanying data-intensive analytical hardware (eg, genome sequencing platforms, mass spectrometry, radio telescopes, etc.)Responsibilities: A' .Maintain, optimize, and secure a suite of Linux-based (CentOS7) HPC clusters that support genomics/bioinformatics/computational biology and modeling applications for a range of internal and external customersManage multi-user environments and software-licenses, as well as supporting the installation/compiling/deployment of open-source and commercial analytical software associated with the bioinformatics team's missionDesign, implement, and enforce best-practices for bioinformatics-related HPC cluster use across the Institute. Assess and anticipate evolving computational infrastructure needs (hardware & software) and scale infrastructure accordingly, in consultation with the budget and input of senior management and technical team membersManage redundant data back-ups and associated hardware/networking/schedulingRepresent Linux-based HPC cluster needs to internal Information Technology principalsApplicants selected are required to possess or be able to obtain and maintain an active security clearance.
