Twelve (12) months following the achievement of a particular grade level (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), an incumbent will only advance to the next grade level provided he/she has taken and passed any and all required written or practical tests, acquired any required certifications and has met acceptable fitness for duty, work record and is able to demonstrate all job performance requirements.
  • Equipment Operator PLNT "D"
    • Two (2) years of experience as a professional equipment operator operating construction equipment such as dump trucks, tractor trailer, backhoes, skid loaders, excavator, telehandlers, rubber tire loader, and forklift

  • A valid Class B Commercial Driver License (CDL) issued from jurisdiction of residence.
  • Must obtain Class 7 Operating Engineering License from DC within two years of employment.

  • Class A CDL

Job Summary

The Equipment Operator is responsible for the operation of various types of engineering equipment (i.e. dump trucks, tractor trailer, backhoes, skid loaders, excavator, telehandlers, rubber tire loader, and forklift) used for construction, renovation and maintenance work. The incumbent also operates equipment and tools for excavation, compaction, paving and minor demolition work.

Job Levels : At each successive grade level of this job (i.e. Grades D, C, B, A and AA), the incumbent is expected to demonstrate increased, distinguishing levels of proficiency and efficiency in knowledge, skills and abilities when performing the assigned duties and essential functions described in this job description

"AA Lead" Level: In addition to independently performing the most complex aspects of the duties and essential functions described, the incumbent is responsible for ensuring work responsibilities of a group or team are properly completed in a timely manner and acts in the absence of the supervisor as required.

  • Operates wheeled tractor with front end loader and backhoe, grader, dozer, paving spreader, boom cranes, vibratory rollers, milling/scarifying machines, dump trucks, pavement breakers, tractor, low boy trailer and other heavy machinery with various attachments.
  • Performs grading operations to fine specification from grade stakes set by engineers. Scrapes, scoops, rolls, levels and compacts soil. Excavates for footings, retaining walls, the placement or repair of utilities and roadway foundations. Applies and levels gravel, crushed stone, sand or other aggregate to specified thickness and grades for the subsurface and the application of sealers.
  • Lays asphalt to the proper thickness and grade. Shapes pavement contours, curbs and drainage ditches. Cleans and refills expansion joints in asphalt and concrete using crack sealer or other prescribed compounds.
  • Completes minor pavement repairs, performs asphalt construction operations such as preparing sub-surfaces, applying tack coat, asphalt courses in varying thicknesses by hand or by use of paving spreader and sealing asphalt surfaces.
  • Lays out work assignments, determines methods, techniques and materials needed to effectively accomplish assignments.

  • Supports response efforts in emergencies, provides immediate maintenance to protect assets. Responds to and provides assistance during severe weather emergencies, ensuring safety requirements are met/exceeded.
  • Creates an excellent customer service experience for riders and maximizes profitability.
  • Attends and passes the required safety training classes and continuously learns industry best practices for working safely and efficiently. Performs assignments according to established industry and WMATA's safety practices and maintenance guidelines.
