The selected Photonics Systems Engineer will perform as a member of an interdisciplinary team of engineers and scientists on different project assignments to develop novel and innovative solutions to advanced technical problems. You will design, develop, build, and test systems and products based on optic, photonic and laser technologies to solve hard problems. You will have the opportunity to work on multiple advanced development systems and to work closely with senior technical leads. Much of the work will be hands-on in a lab environment, but there will be additional work developing and applying mathematical models for simulation and analysis. The successful engineer will contribute to the overall development of photonic and optical systems, including developing and benchmarking system performance models and implementing test procedures.Responsibilities include:Design and analyze photonic components and subsystemsDevelop test plans and perform testing of optical components and subsystemsContribute to the development of innovative solutions to difficult problemsPerform testing on optical assemblies and photonic systemsDocument designs and test resultsFuture responsibilities are expected to include:Present results to customersLead teams of engineers and technicians in the pursuit of program goals, and complete tasks according to schedule, budget and design objectivesAdditional responsibilities include support of proposal teams, and working with customers on product definitionThis is a Dual Level requisitions, candidates will be considered for both a Technical Level 2 and 3 based on the qualifications listed belowBasic Qualifications:BS in Physics, Optics, or Electrical Engineering with 2-4 years' of applicable experience, or 0-1 years' of applicable experience with a MS in Physics, Optics, or Electrical Engineering [T2]BS in Physics, Optics, or Electrical Engineering with 5-8 years' of applicable experience, or 3-6 years' of applicable experience with a MS in Physics, Optics, or Electrical Engineering [T3]Hands-on skills for assembly and testing of photonic designs, including breadboarding, optical receivers, and fiber amplifiersExperience working in an optical lab environment utilizing equipment such as optical spectrum analyzers (OSA), Optical Vector Analyzers (OVA), optical wavelength meters, optical high-speed detectors and high-speed digitizing oscilloscopesKnowledge of LabVIEW, MATLAB and/or Python programming languagesGreat problem solving and troubleshooting skills. Good verbal and written communications skills for presentation of technical approaches, work performed, results, and findingsSecret clearance eligibility, US Citizenship is a pre-requisitePreferred Qualifications:Experience with precision optical, micro-optic and/or fiber optic communication components and verification, eg Bit Error Rate (BER) testingExperience with commercial optical transport products, including 40G/100G coherent systemsUnderstanding of fiber optic transmission, communication theory, advanced optical signal coding and modulation formats, and network architectureExperience with transmission modeling software (such as VPI)Knowledge and experience with fiber optic systems and components, such as lasers, modulators, EDFAs, dispersion compensators, fibers, passive components, receivers, and high-speed optical modules and sub-systemsKnowledge of computer instrumentation control.Proficiency in LabVIEW, MATLAB and/or Python programming languages.Eligibility for Top Secret, SAP, and/or SCI accessSalary Range: 85764 - 128646Salary Range 2: 106260 - 159390Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results.
