Full Time Position

Overview

Under the supervision of the Regional Program Director, the Recreation Manager I will oversee the operations and management of the thriving Charles Houston Recreation Center. Primary responsibilities entail overseeing the facility schedule, submitting workorders, processing invoices and payroll. The incumbent will provide professional administrative, supervisory, and programmatic duties. The Recreation Manager I is responsible for increasing teen center attendance and participation through engaging programs and activities. Help represent the facility by interacting regularly with patrons to create connections within the community. Assist with increasing public awareness of recreational programs and opportunities through neighborhood canvassing and events. through effective leaderships, human resources and budget management, and exceptional customer service.

Major areas of responsibility include:

  1. Outreach, Direct Service and Community Engagement (30% of position/12 hours per week)

Create a welcoming, inclusive, and safe space for patrons. Create and maintain relationships with community groups, schools, parents, and others to assist in advancing the department’s mission, publicizing events, and expanding general programming support and resources. Communicates clearly and courteously with internal and external customers. Responds to patron inquires and complaints in a timely manner.

  1. Facility Operations (25% of position/10 hours per week)

Assists in planning and directing the daily operations of the center. Schedules and supervises programs. Provides customers with RecTrac membership and program registration. Process RecTrac room rental reservations and/or room reservation requests. Coordinates set up and take down of equipment and monitors the proper use of the equipment.

  1. Administrative/ Supervision (25% of position/10 hours per week)

Leads a team of part-time staff that are critical to maintaining operations. Manages personnel duties including recruiting, scheduling, work assignments, trainings, and performance appraisals to ensure staff provides exceptional customer experiences to patrons. Supervises and implements cash control procedures and expense reviews in accordance with the city’s cash handling policies and procedures. Ensures compliance with financial guidelines and reconciles revenue and expense reports. Prepares deposits, budgets, financial reports, and purchase orders. Assists in the preparation of operating budgets. Assist with procurement of supplies for facility/program operation, record management including personnel files, registration forms, etc. Processes invoices and ensures proper cost center coding. Procurement of supplies for facility/program operation. Ensures accountability for fixed assets. Maintains records of payroll, activity attendance and cash receipts. Assist with the coordination of facility rentals and amenities, processing rental inquiry forms, and refunds. Reports accidents, injuries, incidences and property loss/damage.

  1. Facility Maintenance (10% of position/4 hours per week)

Oversees the day-to-day implementation of policies, procedures, programs, and workplace expectations to ensure a well-managed and well-maintained building. Ensures that all facilities meet quality standards for cleanliness and maintenance. Proactively performs center safety and maintenance checks and responds to building concerns ensuring the safety and cleanliness for quality programs and experiences. Oversees and coordinates maintenance and repair work assignments performed by technicians, vendors and contractors performing building maintenance, landscaping, and janitorial work. Promptly submit requests for building maintenance, repairs, cleaning needs, etc.

  1. Other (10% of position/4 hours per week)

Other duties include being accessible for after-hours needs such as staff support, response to facility alarms, emergency situations, and inclement weather responsibilities. Provide front desk and facility coverage when needed. Ability to respond for any afterhours emergencies required for the facility. Management of patrons and staff during emergency situations. Participate in department meetings and training as required. Perform and complete other duties as assigned by supervisor.

To best serve in this position, good knowledge of the social and recreational sciences, including the theory, principles, and practices of recreation are needed. Strong planning and organizational skills, windows proficiency, and excellent communication skills will contribute to your success in the position. You must also demonstrate an ability to plan and execute programs and activities and work effectively in a group setting. Availability to work various hours not limited to Monday-Thursday from 4-9 pm and Fridays 3pm-12 midnight and rotational weekends.

You should possess independent judgment and initiative, enthusiasm, flexibility, diplomacy, excellent oral and written communication, and emotional intelligence. Your mission and values must align with those of the Department (below). You should also be available to work various hours which include days, evenings, weekends, and some holidays. You will have the ability to be on call and resolve urgent situations over the phone and/or by reporting in person.

Recreation Leader III Key Performance objectives:
  • Be Responsive, Professional, Courteous and Accountable in all interactions.
  • Plan, develop and implement structured enrichment and group activities.
    • Actively supervise teen program participants per the code of conduct.
    • Ensure all safety precautions and rules are followed.
    • Actively participate in staff meetings, advisory council meetings, and in-service trainings.
    • Manage building operations during events and complete administrative paperwork.
    • Complete incident reports and submit them by the end of the shift.
    • Maintain records using Microsoft programs, RecTrac software, and general filing.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Four-Year College Degree with completion of college-level courses in recreation, physical education, or fine arts; three years of progressively-responsible experience in community recreation work including some experience at the level of Recreation Coordinator; or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills, and abilities.

Preferred Qualifications

Experience in community recreation preferably in a setting working with individuals of all abilities, ethnicities, and socio-economic status; Passionate for kids, creative, flexible, excellent communication skills, and phenomenal customer service; Be available to work flexible hours Monday- Fridays and some weekends & special events; Available to work additional days that will provide the greatest benefit to the organization. Have a deep desire and interest in working with a diverse population.
