Overview

The Aquatics Recreation Coordinator works with the Aquatic Manager and Chinquapin management team in overseeing and leading programs and staff for all aquatic facilities. The coordinator will also be responsible for assisting in the management and operations of the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility, to include serving as Manager on Duty. Seasonal Outdoor Pools managed by this position include Old Town Pool, Memorial Pool, and Warwick Pool. An incumbent in this class works under the close supervision of a Recreation Manager and should be available to work various hours which include days, evenings, weekends, and some holidays.

Major areas of responsibility include:
  1. Oversight of day-to-day operation, maintenance, and administration of the City of Alexandria’s aquatic facilities, including the hiring, training, certification, and supervision of pool managers, pool operators, lifeguards, and water safety instructors.
  2. Development and implementation of various aquatics programs (including learn to swim classes), ensuring that program objectives are met, and exceptional customer experiences are provided.
  3. Monitors the annual program budget and provides justification for additional resources that support the aquatics operation.
  4. Creation of safe working conditions for aquatics staff and safe recreational facilities for customers by providing ongoing staff training and audits and by performing equipment maintenance and proper chemical handling in accordance with local health codes and national training standards.

The Aquatics Recreation Coordinator is part of the Division Management Team and is involved in recreation as well as aquatics management. This position works on a team of five full-time managers including two Recreational Coordinators, two Recreational Managers, and one Regional Program director for all Aquatic Operations within the City of Alexandria. This also includes serving as Manager On Duty at the Chinquapin Park Recreation Center and Aquatics Facility, attending division and department meetings, and serving on Division, Department and/or City committees and work groups. The Recreation Coordinator position is provided with opportunities and encouraged to attend professional trainings, conferences, and be involved in professional organizations.

You should possess good knowledge of the principles and practices of aquatics management and community recreational work; have demonstrated the abilities to plan and direct aquatic program activities; develop and maintain effective working relationships with co-workers, participants and the public; generate interest and participation in center activities with varied age groups; ability to lead and manage an aquatics safety program; and the ability to communicate clearly and effectively, both orally and writing.

You will have the ability to be on call and resolve urgent situations over the phone and/or by reporting in person to the facility.

Aquatics Recreation Coordinator key performance objectives:

Recruit, hire, coach, and retain 80 seasonal aquatics staff (pool managers, pool operators, lifeguards, and water safety instructors) annually by Memorial Day weekend to operate multiple pool locations.
  1. Conduct bi-monthly staff in-service, quarterly audits, and bi-annual evaluations to foster engagement, teamwork, skill development, and maintain Red Cross certifications.
  2. Directly supervise pool managers, pool operators, lifeguards, and water safety instructors and encourage them to be leaders by providing coaching, mentorship, and strength-based delegation to achieve team goals effectively and efficiently.
  3. Collaborate with Aquatics Program Specialist to manage facility reservations and usage for public lap swimmers, rental groups, swim teams, class participants, event attendees, and partners through development of processes, relationships, and mission-based decision-making to meet community needs while achieving an overall cost recovery goal of 75-100%, and participant overall satisfaction of 95%.
  4. Collaborate with Aquatics Manager to develop and manage a variety of “community” and “market rate” aquatic programs, including a comprehensive Red Cross learn to swim program serving approximately 500 participants quarterly in group and private lessons, special events, educational programs, camps, and swim team, meeting program objectives, overall cost recovery goals of 75-100%, and participant overall satisfaction of 95%.
  5. Provides excellent customer service providing information, answering questions and concerns from the public
  6. Work with the Recreation Manager on daily and monthly monitoring and reporting of revenues and expenditures against the approved budget. Monitors the annual program budget and provides additional justification for additional resources that support the aquatics operation.

Minimum & Additional Requirements

Four-Year College Degree; completion of college-level courses in recreation, physical education, business management or related fields. Experience in community recreation at a level equivalent to a Recreation Supervisor I, or any equivalent combination of experience and training which provides the required knowledge, skills and abilities.
Certified as an Aquatics Facility Operator or Certified Pool Operation. Certification in Lifeguarding, First Aid, CPR for the Professional Rescuer, and WSI or the equivalent.
Ability to work early morning, late evening, weekend, and holiday shifts. Ability to be on call and resolve urgent situations over the phone and by reporting in person to the facility

Preferred Qualifications

More than 5 years of aquatics programming experience, including hands on experience producing aquatics programs. Experience in scheduling and coordinating aquatic staffing and programs; ability to provide working leadership to part-time and seasonal staff. Specialized experience producing a variety of “market rate” aquatic programs for all ages. Customer focused and proven ability to work successfully with others.

Excellent knowledge of computer software to include Word office suite, RecTrac, Kronos, Munis, and other data collection and tracking software.

CPRP or CPRE Certified, LGI, LGIT and/or WSIT or equivalent
