Duties

  • You will serve as principle advisor to the Branch Head and Deputy Branch Head on historical programs, projects, and policies.
  • You will lead and direct production of naval historical products in one of three sections within Histories Branch.
  • You will serve as immediate supervisor of seven historians, responsible for training, pay and leave administration, performance reviews, and personnel actions.
  • You will develop, plan, and oversee creation of monographs, booklets, articles, and ship histories that provide historical background and analysis germane to current U.S. naval activities.
  • You will assign, track, review, and provide timely responses to external and internal historical inquiries.

  • Supervisors in the executive branch have a heightened personal responsibility for advancing government ethics. You will be required to review the 14 General Principles of Ethical Conduct at 5 CFR 2635.101.


Qualifications

In addition to the Basic Requirements for this position, your resume must also demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the next lower grade level (GS-12) or pay band in the Federal service or equivalent experience in the private or public sector performing most or all of the following duties: (1) Managing workload, providing technical oversight, developing performance plans, taking disciplinary measures, and facilitating professional development for a workforce; (2) Planning, researching, and preparing historical products (e.g. studies, monographs, briefings, and booklets) that furnish detailed backgrounds and perspectives to current issues; (3) Organizing and leading historical research projects to ensure completion within established timeframes; (4) Delivering professional written responses to external and internal historical inquiries based on thorough research; and (5) Communicating orally regarding historical matters (e.g. presenting briefs, participating in conferences, and exchanging professional views) to high-level colleagues and stakeholders.

Education

Applicants must meet the following Basic Requirements of the Office of Personnel Management (OPM) Qualifications Standards Manual: Applicants must possess:

A. a degree in history; or related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history.
OR
B. a combination of education and experience: courses equivalent to a major in history, or a major in a related field that included at least 18 semester hours in history, as shown in A above, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

This is a Term Position with a Not to Exceed date of 2 Years; May be subsequently converted noncompetitively to a permanent competitive service appointment.

This position is eligible for part time, full time or ad-hoc telework at the discretion of management.
