Duties

  • Serves as a Bureau of Land Management (BLM) spokesperson for background and live interviews with print and broadcast news media on a wide range of program topics that fall within the Bureau's area of responsibility.
  • Prepares and oversees the development of media relations campaigns to include message development, branding activities, news conferences, editorial board meetings, radio interview tours, etc.
  • Develops and maintains effective working relationships with national media outlet representatives.
  • Arranges and coordinates follow-up, detailed interviews with senior management and/or staff whenever possible or necessary.
  • Coordinates development and presentation of the necessary background and briefing information for senior management and/or staff prior to their participation in an interview with print or news media representatives.
  • Responsible for planning, organizing, and developing communication programs and determining effective dissemination of information through the appropriate mass communications media in support of the Bureau's mission.
  • Researches and seeks out opportunities for expanded Bureau coverage by members of conventional and new media.
  • Responsible for keeping up-to-date on current developments within the Bureau which affect the public, legislative relationships, and major program matters of immediate concern to the BLM.

Qualifications

For the GS-14 Level: You must possess one (1) full year of specialized experience at or equivalent to the GS-13 level that is equivalent in difficulty and complexity as indicated by the following examples: Experience managing a strategic and established public affairs program and utilizing a diverse array of traditional and digital platforms to effectively communicate information about agency programs, policies, initiatives, and other relevant information to the public and internally to leadership.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

There is no substitution of education for experience at the GS-14 grade level.

Tax Law Impact for PCS: Moving expenses reimbursement is a taxable benefit.
