In this position, you will serve as a Maintenance Mechanic Woodcrafter/Machinist responsible for a combination of wood craft work and the fabrication of metal parts and assemblies. Typical assignments include:
  • Making and repairing high grade wooden items such as cabinetry, furniture, and decorative woodwork for use in site buildings, including historical buildings, offices, and for other uses.
  • Planning and laying out work from specifications, blueprints, sketches, and oral instructions to select cuts, turns, shapes, joins, bonds, fits, assembles, and decorates wooden materials and parts, using the full range of hand and power woodworking tools, machines, and techniques.
  • Manufacturing complex and non-routine parts and items of equipment from raw stock of different metals, metal alloys, and other materials that are typically one­ of-a-kind, involving unusual trade problems and requiring a high degree of ingenuity and responsibility.
  • Machining of surfaces at unusual or compound angles, items that require differential or compound indexing, multiple lead and various other nonstandard screw threads, helical or other types of gears, worm threads, or surfaces closely interrelated dimensions or complex configurations that usually require special adaption or extension of the use of conventional machine tools; and/or performing machining operations on computer numerical control (CNC) machine tools including shop floor programming and using such procedures as multiple setups, and in place machining of fixtures.

Promotion Potential: Future promotions will be dependent on your ability to perform the duties at a higher level, the continuing need for an employee assigned to the higher level, and administrative approval.

All MWEOC staff have emergency assignments and are considered deployed in place. Exercises and activations are planned and unplanned, and may require long hours, nights, weekends and holidays.

All MWEOC employees are: (1) required to use a government-issued electronic device (to include cellular phones); (2) subject to recall during emergency situations; and (3) required to perform work in locations both above and below ground.

EMERGENCY ASSIGNMENT: Every FEMA employee has regular and recurring emergency management responsibilities, though not every position requires routine deployment to disaster sites. All positions are subject to recall around the clock for emergency management operations, which may require irregular work hours, work at locations other than the official duty station, and may include duties other than those specified in the employee's official position description. Travel requirements in support of emergency operations may be extensive in nature (weeks to months), with little advance notice, and may require employees to relocate to emergency sites with physically austere and operationally challenging conditions.

COVID VACCINATION: As required by Executive Order 14043, Federal employees are required to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 regardless of the employee's duty location or work arrangement (e.g., telework, remote work, etc.), subject to such exceptions as required by law. At that time, you may be eligible to request to continue to telework one or more days a pay period in accordance with FEMA's telework policy.

Qualifications

The qualification requirements listed below must be met within 30 days of the closing date of the announcement.

Applicants will be rated in accordance with the OPM Federal Wage System Qualification Standard . Although a specific length of time and experience is not required for most trade and labor occupations, you must meet any screen-out element listed, and show through experience and training that you possess the quality level of knowledge and skill necessary to perform the duties of the position at the level for which you are applying. Qualification requirements emphasis is on the quality of experience, not necessarily the length of time.

Working Conditions: Wood crafters usually work in woodworking machine shop areas or other enclosed areas which are sometimes unheated. They are frequently exposed to eye, skin, nose, and lung irritations from glue, bonding chemicals, vapors, splinters, and sawdust. They are also frequently exposed to the possibility of receiving cuts and serious injuries, such as loss of fingers, from accidents while operating woodworking machines. To minimize or eliminate the effects of some of these conditions, wood crafters follow numerous safety practices and wear or use various protective devices. For example: - they may wear protective eyeglasses or a face mask to protect against flying wooden particles; - they may wear protective ear devices to lower noise; - they may wear a respirator to protect against sawdust and vapors; - they use machine guards to protect against cuts and loss of fingers; - they follow numerous safety practices in operating machines and using tools and equipment. Some of the protective devices wood crafters use may be uncomfortable and may be worn for long periods.

Machinists: Work is performed inside in areas that are usually noisy and dirty, and where there is a constant danger to the skin and eyes from flying metal chips and abrasive particles; skin irritation from contact with coolants, lubricants, and abrasive compounds; danger to fingers, hands, and other parts of the body from cutting tools, grinding wheels, rotating pieces, and moving parts of machines.

Physical Effort: Wood crafters work in tiring positions for prolonged periods. Their work requires frequent standing, bending, stooping, crouching, and arm movement. They sometimes do their work in cramped areas, on temporary platforms, and overhead. Wood crafters frequently lift and carry items weighing up to 20 kilograms (45 pounds). They may occasionally lift heavier items with assistance.

Machinists: The work requires standing, stooping, bending, and reaching. Frequently handle, lift, and carry objects weighing up to 18 kilograms (40 pounds). They are sometimes required to lift and move items weighing in excess of23 kilograms (50 pounds) with the help of weight handling equipment or with assistance from other workers.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional, philanthropic, religious, spiritual, community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.
