Duties

You will perform as a supervisor and leader of the Morale, Well-Being and Recreation (MWR) Division which falls within the Military Support Division (MSD) at the U.S. Coast Guard Yard.

Being a civilian working for the Coast Guard makes you a valuable team member. Typical duties include:

* Providing a wide range of facilities for use by personnel and their dependents assigned to the activity on a permanent basis, transient or temporary duty personnel, military retirees and other eligible patrons residing in the community.

* Supporting a major military program designed to enhance the morale and readiness of the military members and their dependents and foster the increased retention of personnel in which the Coast Guard has invested resources through training and development.

* Providing oversight and direction as cognizant authority to the MWR program to all units in the geographic area supported by CG Yard. This position manages several diverse types of MWR activities. Included are such facilities as the gymnasium (called the Columbus Recreation Center), a service club (called the Dry Dock Club with dining, bar and meeting/banquet rental capabilities), entertainment ticket program, fitness/cardio rooms, guest housing locations (called the Steinbock Grove Housing and Berry Hall Housing), rental equipment/etc. program, picnic areas, rental storage sites, equipment, softball fields, outdoor fitness areas, swimming pool, marina, and other programs and activities as authorized by higher directive.

* Determining training needs, completing performance evaluations as required for entire staff, providing constructive feedback and takes disciplinary action as appropriate. Recognizing performance achievements through appropriate monetary or other recognition awards.

* Developing, coordinating, and managing an extensive volunteer MWR activity program. Identifying tasks and/or functions that are appropriate for volunteers, publicize need and select volunteers.

* Developing, monitoring and executing the MWR budget for both appropriated and non-appropriated funds for the major program areas ... including justification of requested funds.

* Advising activity managers of policy issues, solicit their views, and to prepare appropriate recommendations for implementation or change.

* Continuously remains aware of, possesses/displays and improves upon necessary optimal Core Competencies of the (lead MWR) position of: Communication, Customer Service, Representing the Agency, Teamwork and Cooperation, Technical Proficiency, Assigning-Monitoring-Evaluating and Work, Leadership/Management and Supervision.

Qualifications

Applicants must have at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-12. Specialized experience is experience that has equipped you with the particular ability, skill, and knowledge to successfully perform the duties of this position and is typically in or related to this line of work.

National Service Experience (i.e., volunteer experience): Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

The Office of Personnel management (OPM) must authorize employment offers made to current or former political appointees. This is a supervisory position, under provisions of the Civil Service Reform Act, first time supervisors and/or managers will be required to serve a one-year probationary period.
