Duties

This position is not eligible for permanent remote telework.

This position is supported by a grant from the Andrew W. Mellon Foundation to the Library for a multiyear initiative to connect more deeply with Black, Hispanic, Indigenous and other minority communities by expanding its collections, using technology to enable storytelling, and offering more internship and fellowship opportunities. The initiative, Of the People: Widening the Path, creates new opportunities for more people to engage with the Library, thus weaving a more inclusive American story. This work will expand the Library's efforts to ensure that a diversity of experiences is reflected in our historical record and inform how we use those materials to understand our past. The initiative is part of a larger vision at the Library to connect with all Americans by inviting new generations to participate in creating, preserving and sharing the nation's cultural treasures and building on the Library's commitment to collect and preserve more underrepresented perspectives and experiences. The American Folklife Center portion of the initiative funds program staff positions, subgrants to individuals and organizations involved in the contemporaneous documentation of historically underrepresented communities such as African-American, Indigenous, and other communities of color, and technology infrastructure to aid in community collections.

The incumbent coordinates implementation of digital preservation and access initiatives associated with the Library's Of the People initiative and facilitates the integration of these digital materials with traditional library services. Individually and in collaboration with division, IT, and digital media experts, the incumbent coordinates program components that include project workflows, new digital content policies, metadata and standards for content development, and new models for information access and delivery. The incumbent serves as a digital content manager for the division, and is responsible for staying up to date on best practices in digital archival management and the use of approved digital inventory systems.

The Digital Project Coordinator liaises with the library profession and information technology industry, Digital Services Directorate (DSD) and various working groups throughout the Library involved in digital technologies and automated systems as they relate to preservation, reference and access. In coordination with division experts, plans and manages a wide variety of projects for service and access of the AFC digital holdings related to the Library's Of the People initiative. These collections center largely on sound/audio and/or moving image content and materials, but may also include other types of ethnographic materials including text, graphic, manuscript, and mixed media to include web content. Projects may involve one or more of the digital material collections and are intended to establish and/or enhance standards for digital preservation and creating and maintaining digital reference services and outreach in a collaborative Internet-based environment.

Coordination efforts may include assisting in planning the digital conversion of analog collections and acquisition of digital content for specific digital projects, as well as working with various external collaborators for projects.
