FORTUNE 100 Best Companies to Work For Computerworld Best Places to Work in IT FORTUNE Best Workplaces for Millennials Forbes America's Best Employers IND123 Basic Purpose To lead a team of accountants in the execution of Navy Federal's financial accounting processes by appropriately applying federal and industry regulations and standards to support the accurate and proper reconciliation and maintenance of the organization's financial statements and reports. Assist in leading the operational strategy and ensure the alignment with the division and corporate goals. Responsibilities: Assist in overseeing and directing accounting activities required to ensure financial records reflecting the proper application of industry standards to include account reconciliations, analytics and variance analysis Coordinate the month-end closing process; review and monitor entries to ensure accuracy of the balance sheet and income statement accounts Apply broad knowledge and ensure compliance with Generally Accepted Accounting Principles (GAAP) and Accounting Standard Codification (ASC) by applying accounting standards in the preparation of Navy Federal's financial statements Identify simple assumptions, accounting methods and instances of incorrect application of GAAP/ASC; quantify the impact of such treatment and recommend solutions Supervise and ensure the proper classification of transactions, funds and the resolution of misapplied funds or outstanding items Interpret emerging accounting policies and make recommendations for in-house application and changes to internal practices to remain in compliance Supervise and lead in the conducting of in-depth analysis to identify, isolate and resolve discrepancies; contribute to quality control and process improvement Lead and manage the investigation and resolution of complex discrepancies, data entry errors and out of balance situations; prepare and present recommendations for immediate action or proposals for policy changes to prevent losses Assist in leading projects to include development and integration testing for new or enhanced automated financial accounting systems Serve as point of contact for inquiries, problem resolution and audit responses for internal and external business partners Stay abreast and ensure compliance with federal/state and industry standards/principles, company practices, policies and procedures Develop team capabilities, provide growth opportunities and guide career objectives to ensure staff retention and engagement Act as manager in the incumbent's absence Perform supervisory/managerial responsibilities o Ensure adequate/skilled staffing; select employees o Establish performance goals and priorities o Prepare, conduct and review performance appraisals o Develop, mentor and counsel staff o Provide input and/or prepare budget requirements for Annual Financial Plan (AFP) o Ensure section/branch goals and objectives align with division/department strategy o Ensure efficiency of operations Perform other duties as assigned Qualifications and Education Requirements: Bachelor's degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or the equivalent combination of experience, education and training Experience in supervising and leading/guiding employees Significant experience in supervising, coaching and training team members in the application of complex accounting rules Experience in public or private accounting applying complex accounting treatments and resolving complex accounting issues Advanced knowledge working in SOX control environment to include documentation and testing of controls and the effectiveness over financial reporting Experience in researching technical accounting issues and making recommendations for the application and implementation of accounting principles Working knowledge of financial and accounting systems (eg PeopleSoft General Ledger) Experience working with cross-functional teams including demonstrated skill in presenting complex financial information clearly and concisely Advanced skill in managing multiple priorities and meeting deadlines Experience in initiating, managing and executing change Advanced analytical, organizational and decision-making skills Advanced organizational, planning and time management skills Advanced skill building effective relationships through rapport, trust, diplomacy and tact Advanced skill influencing and building consensus with business partners Advance skill speaking and/or presenting in front of groups in a professional setting Advanced interpersonal, oral and written communication skills and the ability to effectively collaborate with various external and internal technical and functional contacts Desired Qualifications and Education Requirements: Advanced degree in Accounting, Finance, Business Administration, or the equivalent combination of experience, education and training CPA designation Previous experience in the financial services industry Working knowledge of Navy Federal products, services, policies and procedures Hours: Monday - Friday, 8:30am - 5:00pm Location: 820 Follin Lane, Vienna VA 22180 As a COVID-19 safety measure, our employees must either provide proof of COVID-19 vaccination or follow additional safety protocols, including testing. Salary range: [$98,600] to [$139,400] Due to COVID-19 and social distancing, this position will be temporarily working from home with plans to return to campus at the desired location listed once Navy Federal is back to normal operations. The specific logistics for returning to campus will be determined at a future date by individual leadership.
