Senior Rocket Test Engineer - Mechanical/Pressure Systems

We are currently seeking an experienced Senior Rocket Test Engineer to join our growing facility located near Culpeper, in beautiful rural Orange County, Virginia (1.5 hours from Washington DC). Test engineers work with customers, program managers and project engineers to define test objectives and identify and select test methods and instrumentation. They then create plans and procedures for safely conducting these tests, utilizing our existing four test facilities and equipment, and/or designing new tools or techniques. Test engineers tackle a variety of problems and use a wide range of engineering skills, from mechanical and aerospace to electrical and software. Types of tests include static rocket motor firings, case proof and burst pressure testing, case structural loads testing, aeroheat material testing, and dynamic / environmental testing, and direct-connect ramjet / scramjet testing. This position may be filled at the level posted or at the next higher level. Essential Job Functions (Including % of Time for Each) 40% - Plan, devise and prepare test methods, instrumentation and tooling, applying extensive testing technical expertise. Interface with Design/Project Engineering to develop/interpret test requirements. Work with Quality and Safety to ensure test methods meet customer and government requirements/regulations. Identify/specify facility configurations to meet test requirements. Design test fixtures or identify existing test tooling to interface with test articles. 30% - Conduct, oversee and support test operations in accordance with safety and quality policy and procedures, maintaining overall technical control of test programs. May include physical/mechanical hardware setup, instrumentation calibration and setup, electrical/controls setup, test article prep, control software input preparation, etc. May include directing subcontractors in their execution of subcontracted test programs at off-site test facilities. 20% - Prepare technical documentation, including test procedures, safety reviews and test readiness reviews. 10% - Manage cost and schedule for test programs. Coordinate cost and schedule planning/estimates. Requirements Requires a Bachelor of Science degree in Mechanical Engineering or a related discipline, along with at least five (5) years of related propulsion / wind tunnel testing experience (or an equivalent combination of education and experience). Related work experience involving pressure and/or mechanical systems is preferred. At least five (5) years of propulsion or wind tunnel testing experience strongly desired. An advanced degree is a plus. Strong written and verbal communication skills as well as strength in teaming / collaboration in a diverse work environment required. Being fully vaccinated for COVID-19 is a condition of employment at Aerojet Rocketdyne. Work Environment/Physical Requirements: The work environment may require a combination of indoor and outdoor activity (hot, cold, wet, humid conditions) with a varied amount of walking, standing, sitting, climbing (ie ladders, stair, scaffolding, ramps), balance (maintaining body equilibrium to prevent falling when walking, standing, or crouching on narrow, slippery, or erratically moving surfaces), bending, reaching, handling/fingering (seizing, holding, grasping, turning picking, pinching), stooping, kneeling, crouching and ability to lift/carry/push/pull up to 50 pounds. Work may require the ability to operate material handling equipment (forklift, crane, hoist, man lift, etc.) in a safe manner. While performing the duties of this job, employees may work around variable noise levels or with fume or airborne particles, hazardous chemicals, etc. requiring the use of personal protective equipment such as face protection (safety glasses, goggles, face shield), foot protection (ie steel toed shoes, rubber boots, etc.), gloves, hard hat, shop coat and hearing protection. Work requires the ability to change into or out of personal protective equipment when entering or exiting manufacturing, laboratory, or other areas. Some employees may be required to drive between various locations within the Company facility or between locations. Work duties may also be required to work in a standard office setting and to use standard office equipment, including a computer and/or the ability to travel by air or auto.
