Job Description

Work at the Washington Post to support the mobile team responsible for building and maintaining native iOS and Android applications. These applications rely on services provided by core team which is responsible for managing the infrastructure, back-end services and publishing pipelines for site, apps and distributed platforms for our readers. Core team works closely with other engineering teams at the Post, by providing centralized content logic as well as shared infrastructure and best practices. We build tools that allow the newsroom, and our partners on the front end to surface stories to readers in a meaningful way.

As an Associate Software Engineer, you will perform technical analysis and design, develop and enhance applications based on user requirements in a variety of technical environments. You will also often be involved in small or mid-size projects or contribute to a distinct task of a large project.

Responsibilities
  • Gather business and technical requirements by working closely with the Native Apps and Site Engineering teams, as well as others within the Engineering department.
  • Assist in designing and developing high-level solutions to meet defined requirements by understanding and analyzing current system functionality and following established development methodologies and standards.
  • Participate in data and object modeling sessions.
  • Identify detailed characteristics of solution design and write detailed specifications when appropriate.
  • Research available technologies outside of the company and recommend appropriate design solutions.
  • Plan, develop, and conduct unit testing; assist in planning and conducting other testing (e.g., integration, system, etc.).
  • Provide timely and effective maintenance support and problem resolution for existing systems by collaborating and coordinating with vendors and others.
  • Maintain documentation of production problems and their solutions.


Qualifications
  • Bachelor's degree preferred; focus in computer science, engineering, business or related technical field preferred.
  • Prior experience in a similar role preferred.
  • Strong analytical, evaluation and problem-solving skills.
  • Knowledge of relevant technologies: Python, Flask, Celery, Kafka, NGINX, CDN, Mongo, AWS, ECS, Docker
  • Ability to develop solutions by applying relevant technologies and ensuring maintainability, extensibility and code reuse.
  • Understanding of code optimization and application performance.
  • Knowledge of testing and quality assurance practices including unit testing and code documentation.
  • Excellent verbal/written communication and collaboration skills.
  • Ability to deliver quality solutions within established timelines.
