Duties

As a Physical Scientist, you will:
  • Serve as a recognized scientific authority and expert in biologically inspired materials assembly and physics, and as such have the responsibility to plan, coordinate, implement, and evaluate research programs in this field on a national and international level.
  • Determine scientific focus and direction of the research program, prepare calls for proposals, organize independent peer reviews, recommend funding allocations, organize Principal Investigator meetings, serve as a liaison on committees, and assess scientific progress of the program.
  • Conceive, justify, plan, initiate, manage, and coordinate all aspects of programs that includes a diverse range of materials science based on principles and concepts of biology.
  • Develop connections and interfaces between the projects supported within the program and other research programs; secure essential information in all aspects of a broad range of work that serves the core research programs.
  • Develop long range plans with intermediate goals and resource requirements, taking into consideration financial and technical constraints. Identify and analyze the scientific needs of programs and recommend and oversee appropriate research to mission needs.

Qualifications

BASIC EDUCATION REQUIREMENT:
  • Degree: physical science, engineering, or mathematics that included 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science such as mechanics, dynamics, properties of materials, and electronics.
    or
  • Combination of education and experience -- education equivalent to one of the majors shown in A above that included at least 24 semester hours in physical science and/or related engineering science, plus appropriate experience or additional education.

  • In addition to meeting the education requirement above, candidates must possess the experience below.

    SPECIALIZED EXPERIENCE REQUIREMENT: A qualified candidate's online application and resume must demonstrate at least one year of specialized experience equivalent to the GS-14 grade level in the Federal service. Specialized experience for this position is defined as:
  • Initiating new scientific projects or providing leadership for broad and complex programs/projects.
  • Applying a thorough knowledge of the state of the physical sciences and related technology to assess and facilitate consideration of all appropriate means to achieve program goals.
  • Supporting fundamental experimental and theoretical research to provide the knowledge base for the discovery and design of new materials with novel structures, properties, and functions.


  • Education

    There is no substitution of education for experience at the GS-15 level.
