As a senior member of the communications team, you will report to the director of communications, be supported by a team of 6, and lead all content and creative work across the Patient-Centered Outcomes Research Institute (PCORI). In this role, you will work with subject matter experts across PCORI and leverage synergies to enhance content and creative communications efforts. PCORI funds research that offers patients and caregivers the information they need to make important healthcare decisions. Patients, their families, and clinicians face a wide range of complex and often confusing choices when it comes to addressing health and healthcare concerns. They need trustworthy information to decide which option is best for them. As Associate Director, Content and Creative, you will oversee content development efforts, including planning, creating, editing, reviewing, and updating technical and nontechnical editorial and creative material to be used across all communications channels to support the organization's strategic goals. You will manage an in-house team of writers, editors, designers, and an executive speechwriter'aalong with freelancers and consultants as needed'ato ensure timely, consistent delivery of content within budget and style guidelines. In this role, you will think strategically about how to best engage each target audience and how that audience prefers to consume their information. You will be our primary brand steward, managing brand guidelines, tone, voice, and organization style guide. You will also lead the writing, designing, and production of PCORI's Annual Report, an activity mandated by Congress. Organization OverviewWe are an independent, nonprofit organization authorized by Congress to fund comparative clinical effectiveness research (CER) which compares two or more available healthcare options to determine what works best for which patients and under what circumstances. We fund research and analyses to generate high-quality, reliable, and meaningful information to enable better-informed health and healthcare decisions by patients, their caregivers, and other stakeholders in transforming our health systems. We achieve this by supporting patient-centered outcomes research, which is CER that focuses not only on traditional clinical outcomes but also on the needs, preferences, and outcomes most important to patients and those who care for them. In addition, we seek to improve healthcare delivery and patient outcomes by producing and promoting evidence-based information through research that is guided by patients, caregivers, and the broader healthcare community. ResponsibilitiesDevelop PCORI's content and brand strategy and ensure coordination with overall communications strategy.Plan and manage day-to-day editorial calendar, content, creative, production, and workflow efforts, policies, procedures, and processes.Manage the creation, editing, quality assurance, and updating of original, colleague-generated, and contractor-provided editorial and graphic content, including technical and non-technical reports, web content, documents, speeches and slide decks, journal articles, fact sheets, social media, storytelling narratives, blogs, and other PCORI material.Organize and lead regular cross-function editorial calendar planning and coordination meetings.Oversee technical and editorial review and copyediting processes, ensuring scientific accuracy and adherence to appropriate brand and style guidelines.Oversee the executive speechwriting function.Serve as PCORI's brand ambassador by building and managing brand strategy, architecture, guidelines, and other brand products. Ensure brand compliance across all content and products. Oversee the development, updating, maintenance, and application of PCORI style guidelines.Manage direct reports, freelancers, and contractors as needed.Regularly monitor the look, feel, functionality, quality, and production timelines for all editorial and communications products, meeting or exceeding performance goals and advising the director of needs and opportunities for improvement.Develop and track performance metrics related to content and creative.Collaborate with departments and staff across PCORI, including close collaboration with communications colleagues to accomplish duties and responsibilities.Work with the director of communications and associate directors to accomplish goals and lead the Communications team.Lead the writing, design, and distribution of PCORI's Annual Report.Oversee licenses and permissions for PCORI's use of third-party content.Oversee and manage content requests for editorial and design support and to use PCORI materials, logo, etc. through a Zendesk ticketing system. Required Skills and ExperienceEither a minimum of a bachelor's degree in a health-related field, public health, or medicine with a focus on communications or journalism, or a combination of education and requisite experience and at least 10 years of related work experience. Specialization in health, health care, health policy, or a related field is required. (Experience in a nonprofit, government, or academic setting is a plus.)At least 10 years of experience in editorial/publishing, communications, journalism, or related field is required. (Experience in professional/scholarly publishing is preferred.)At least five years of editorial/publishing management experience, including managing staff and freelancers. Experience managing a team of writers and designers to carry out a wide range of creative activities, managing production schedules, and juggling multiple priorities. At least five years of experience leading a design team creating print and digital graphics, infographics, reports, social media graphics, etc. Experience with online content development and dissemination tools and channels (website, e-newsletters, multimedia, webinars, social media, etc.) required. Experience with electronic production, editorial processing, online content management systems, and project management tools.Exceptional writing/editing skills - including developmental and copyediting/line-editing - are required, along with the ability to shape/improve content for multiple professional and non-professional target audiences and repackage material for multiple uses. Proven ability to develop fresh thinking and creative ideas for content. Strong storytelling skills that can make PCORI's work relevant to different audiences.Expertise in the use of standard style manuals (eg, AMA, Chicago, AP).Familiarity with peer review.Experience with brand stewardship and leading creative development including print, digital, and video.Skilled in plain language writing.
