Assistant General Counsel (Benefits)
The United Mine Workers of America Health and Retirement Funds (the Funds) has an immediate opening for an attorney with five years of employee benefit plan experience. The Funds is a group of six multiemployer plans that provide health and pension benefits primarily to retired coal miners and their eligible dependents.
The Assistant General Counsel (Benefits) will be responsible for providing legal advice to the Funds’ Trustees and staff regarding all aspects of administering an employee benefit plan. Duties include, but are not limited to, the following:
- Researching legal issues and drafting memoranda regarding compliance with related statutes such as ERISA and the Internal Revenue Code, as well as issues involving Medicare compliance and HIPAA;
- Reviewing and providing advice on participants’ eligibility for benefits under the various plan documents and in accordance with the organization’s established procedures;
- Drafting, reviewing, and interpreting contracts and other legal documents; and
- Representing the organization in litigation in federal courts.
Candidates should possess superior analytical and writing skills, be self-motivated and detail-oriented. Knowledge of ERISA and employee benefit plan and trust documents is preferred. Candidates must possess a law degree (J.D.) plus five years related experience and/or training. Bar admission is required.
