Duties

As a Dietitian, you will be:

• Conduct nutritional assessments in a timely fashion including dietary history and laboratory test for each patient to accurately assess metabolic needs.
• Review the prescribed diet. Make nutrition calculations, tailor the diet to the patients individual needs.
• Conduct patient nutrition education, both on an individual basis and through group classes.
• Assist the Chief Dietitian in planning, scheduling and coordinating the functions of the Clinical Nutrition Section including budget management and menu planning, food quality control and service, safety and sanitation, and investigative studies in these areas for improving the efficiency of operations and the quality of services.
• Keep abreast of current developments in the field of foods and nutrition management, and attend professional meetings to maintain professional credentials.

Qualifications

You must meet the following requirements within 30 days of the closing date of this announcement.

For the GS-11 level, you must have one year of specialized experience at a level of difficulty and responsibility equivalent to the GS-09 level. Specialized experience includes: Directs specialized activities of the food service management administrative function in food quality control, food safety/sanitation, and dietetic services.

Examples:
Conducting nutritional assessments including dietary history and laboratory test for each patient to accurately assess metabolic needs OR
Conducting nutritional education OR
Developing or modifying teaching materials OR
Ensuring provision of acceptable and nutritionally adequate meals for all residents with established budgetary and ration allowances.

AND

Bachelors or graduate/higher level degree in the fields of dietetics, food, nutrition, food service management, institution management, or related science. The educational program must have been accredited by the Accreditation Council for Education in Nutrition and Dietetics, or an accrediting body recognized by the U.S. Department of Education at the time the degree was obtained. For dietitian positions, the curriculum must have been in accordance with the qualifying requirements established by the Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics AND Completion of a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for dietitians or nutritionists. Professional registration as a Registered Dietitian (RD) or Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN).

AND

Completed a coordinated undergraduate program, internship, or other clinical component approved by Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics for dietitians or nutritionists.

AND

Registered as a Registered Dietitian Nutritionist (RDN)

The work involves long periods of moving about the work unit. Work requires regular and recurring standing, bending, lifting, stooping, stretching, lifting and repositioning Residents. Must use proper body mechanics when lifting objects and use lift equipment for Residents. The work may require considerable and strenuous physical exertion, such as lifting objects greater the 50 pounds or defending oneself against physical attack.
In addition to the above requirements, you must meet the following time-in-grade requirement, if applicable:
For the GS-11, you must have been at the GS-9 level for 52 weeks

Time After Competitive Appointment: Candidates who are current Federal employees serving on a non-temporary competitive appointment must have served at least three months in that appointment.

Education

The education generally must be from an accredited (or pre-accredited) college or university recognized by the U.S. Department of Education. If you are qualifying based on foreign education, you must submit proof of creditability of education as evaluated by a credentialing agency. Refer to the OPM instructions .

CONDITIONS OF EMPLOYMENT:
- A one year probationary period may be required.
-Must successfully complete a background investigation.

- Pass a pre-employment physical examination. An OF-178 , Certificate of Medical Examination will be required if selected for this position. DO NOT SUBMIT AT TIME OF APPLICATION.
- Selectees will be subject to the AFRH Tuberculosis Surveillance Program.
- Wear required safety clothing and/or equipment required by the position. This may include safety shoes, hard hats, hearing protection, gloves, masks, etc.
- Because the AFRH's mission requires uninterrupted, direct human support and medical care for its Residents, this position is considered essential for continuing AFRH operations. Therefore, the incumbent is expected to arrive for duty on time, as scheduled, and to complete the assigned tour during emergency situations such as hazardous weather.
