Duties

  • Duties described below are at the full-performance level. Duties assigned at a lower grade level will be of more limited scope, performed with less independence and limited complexity; duties will be commensurate with the grade of selected employee.
  • Serves as part of a systems analysis team as a vehicle configuration specialist to conduct studies of advanced vehicle configurations, novel operations (such as urban/regional air mobility), and their impacts on the future air transportation system.
  • Supports systems analysis, mission analysis, and technology assessment for the entire size/speed range of advanced atmospheric missions, vehicle concepts, advanced airspace concepts, and aeronautical technologies.
  • Supports the development/integration of new and unique tools and methods for analysis of novel air transportation missions, vehicle configurations, and airspace concepts.
  • Explores integrated vehicle/transportation system concepts that synergistically combine future air transportation concepts of operation (such as advanced air mobility) with unconventional vehicle concepts (such as autonomous aircraft).
  • Utilizes Multi-disciplinary Design, Analysis, and Optimization (MDAO) tools/techniques to design and optimize advanced aerospace concepts for figures of merit such as total energy consumption, lifecycle environmental impact, and economic viability.
  • Delivers products such as design requirements, feasibility assessments, mission analysis, transportation system analysis, environmental impacts, technology trade studies and sensitivities, cost-benefits analysis, and portfolio analysis.
  • Integrates various study and analysis results into comprehensive technical briefings, reports, and technical papers.

Qualifications

In addition to the basic education requirement (shown below), you must have one year of specialized experience equivalent to the next lower grade, which has equipped you with the particular competencies needed to successfully perform the duties of the position described above.

To qualify for GS-09, you must have:
a) One year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-07 level: assisting a team of engineers involved in the analysis of engineering methods and procedures; or experience that demonstrates application of aerospace or related engineering principles and analytical methods relating to atmospheric vehicles and/or systems;
OR
b) Completed all requirements for a master's or equivalent graduate degree in an appropriate field by June 30, 2022.
OR
c) Completed 2 full academic years of graduate education in an appropriate field by June 30, 2022.
OR
d) Have an equivalent combination of experience and graduate study as discussed in a), b) and c) above by June 30, 2022.

To qualify for GS-11, you must have:
a) You must have one year of directly related specialized experience equivalent to the GS-09 level: conducting engineering analysis and/or assessments of methods and procedures; or experience that demonstrates application of aerospace or related engineering principles sufficient to accomplish test, analysis, and technical problem solving on atmospheric vehicles and/or systems; and providing technical written and oral guidance on various study and analysis results;
OR
b) Completed all requirements for a doctoral degree (i.e., Ph.D. or equivalent) in an appropriate field by June 30. 2022.
OR
c) Completed 3 full academic years of graduate education in an appropriate field by June 30, 2022.
OR
d) Have an equivalent combination of experience and graduate study as discussed in a), b) and c) above by June 30, 2022.

Required college majors for applicants qualifying on the basis of graduate or higher education only:

Aeronautical Engineering, Aeronautics, Aerospace Engineering, Astronautical Engineering, Astronautics, Astrophysics, Electrical Engineering (except power), Electronics Engineering, Applied Mechanics, Engineering Mechanics, Mechanical Engineering, Nuclear Engineering, Nuclear Engineering Physics, Physics, Applied Physics, Engineering Physics.

Other appropriate physical or computer science, mathematics or engineering fields are qualifying if the major includes or is supplemented by at least 12 semester hours (or the equivalent) of appropriate physical science or engineering courses including nine semester hours (or the equivalent) of physics, thermodynamics, fluid dynamics or gas dynamics.

Education

You must have successfully completed a bachelor's or graduate degree with a major in either a) engineering from a college or university that has ABET accredited engineering programs or b) Physical Science, Mathematics, Life Science, Computer Science*, or other field of physical science.
*Note: Curriculum must include 30 semester hours of course work in a combination of mathematics, statistics and computer science. Of the 30 semester hours, 15 must be in any combination of statistics and mathematics which includes differential and integral calculus.

Degrees in engineering technology are not considered to be qualifying for this position.

Additional information
