Duties

Major Duties

As a Writer, you serve as the organization's senior expert in writing and editing speeches and key organizational materials, and providing strategic analysis on a variety of materials.

Your major duties and responsibilities include:
  • Preparing speeches and written materials for the Organization's leadership that clearly and effectively demonstrate the impact, priorities, and outcomes.
  • Writing and editing for other key leaders, and supporting the Office of Communications' leadership team with special writing and editorial assignments.
  • Writing products that are primarily speeches and talking points but may also include journal, op-ed, and magazine articles; press releases; digital content (including blog posts and social media); broad internal communications; and audiovisual presentations/slide decks.
  • Writing products in plain language, and in compliance with English writing standards for grammar, syntax, punctuation, etc.
  • Reviewing work for editorial quality, consistency, and compliance with established style, format, content guidance, accuracy, readability, and appropriateness.
  • Gathering and coordinating information across the organization, which may include conferring with top organization officials and other governmental and nongovernmental organizations, along with grantees.

QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS:

In order to qualify for this GS-14 position, your resume must clearly demonstrate that you have one full year of minimum qualifying experience comparable in difficulty and responsibility to at least the GS-13 level in the federal service.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATION REQUIREMENTS are defined as qualifications that an applicant must possess, at a minimum, to be eligible to participate in an assessment for hire or promotion under the competitive system, e.g., education, experience, and/or other requirements (e.g., licensure). Applicants who do not meet the minimum qualification requirements for the position receive no further consideration.

Examples of minimum qualifying experience equal to the GS-13 level include performing the following types of tasks on a regular and recurring basis:
  • Providing written communication, public affairs support and advice that accurately reflect the organization's goals and visions
AND
  • Ensuring that all products are well-written. (i.e. free from jargon, in plain language, and sensitive to the needs of the targeted audience)
Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service Programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; community; student; social). If such experience is on a part-time basis, you must provide the average number of hours worked per week as well as the beginning and ending dates of the experience so it can be fully credited.

Your qualifications will be evaluated on the following competencies (knowledge, skills, abilities and other characteristics):

WRITING - Recognizes or uses correct English grammar, punctuation, and spelling; communicates information (e.g., facts, ideas, or messages) in succinct and organized manner; produces written information, which may include technical material that is appropriate for the intended audience

MESSAGE DEVELOPMENT AND DELIVERY - Uses writing skills and editorial judgment to strategically develop messages for various audiences; and delivers them by evaluating the most appropriate media channel(s) for the particular needs of the target audience.

RESEARCH AND EVALUATION - Knowledge of the principles, methods, and processes used to conduct a systematic and objective inquiry; including study design, collection, analysis, and interpretation of data; and the reporting of results.
