Job Summary The Director reports to the Senior Director and has accountability for managing resources, (human, material and financial), to ensure quality, cost-effective delivery of services for specific patient populations. Recognized as a professional role model and promotes an environment that supports the goals, mission, vision, philosophy and values of the Division of Nursing and of Washington Hospital Center. Minimum Qualifications Education/Training Bachelor's degree in Nursing is required . Master's degree in nursing preferred. Experience Five years of nursing experience required with 2 years of management and leadership experience. On The Job Experience Approximately three to six months to gain familiarity with the hospital environment, department routines and procedures,and the full range of job duties. License/Certification/Registration Licensure as a registered nurse in the District of Columbia is required. Specialty certification from a nationally recognized nursing organization is required or must be obtained within one year of hire in either his/her clinical specialty or Nursing Administration. BLS is required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities PROBLEM SOLVING: Job requires a high level of problem-solving due to the complexity of the situations encountered. INTERNAL CONTACTS: Internal contacts necessary to effectively advise, consult or counsel others to gain cooperation and acceptance of ideas or actions. INDEPENDENT JUDGEMENT: Work assignments are generally received in the form of broad goals for area(s) of responsibility and requires considerable judgement regarding the interpretation of policies, development of procedures, and selection of appropriate courses of action. Primary Duties and Responsibilities COMMUNICATION & RELATIONSHIP BUILDING Creates a professional atmosphere and an environment of coaching and development that supports shared governance and a high level of employee satisfaction as evidenced by outcomes data. Builds trusting collaborative relationships with all members of the health care environment. Creates an environment that values opinion sharing and utilizes shared decision-making. Hires, evaluates, coaches, mentors, develops, promotes, disciplines, and when necessary terminates to achieve behaviors aligned with the organization's vision, mission and values. Establishes, develops, and maintains effective relationships, working agreements and quality partnerships that value diversity. Collaborates with nursing management and staff in the assessment of competence. KNOWLEDGE OF HEALTHCARE ENVIRONMENT/BUSINESS SKILLS Establishes and maintains a therapeutic and safe environment that facilitates and supports the framework for professional nursing practice, based upon evidenced based practice, in order to achieve optimal patient outcomes. Responsible for creating and supporting a patient first environment that fosters a high level of patient satisfaction as demonstrated by outcomes data and implementation of corrective actions. Utilizes approaches and strategies that support and optimize patient care outcomes that are based on the interdisciplinary plan of care and absolutes of IMOC. Plans and ensures effective staff selection, availability and support to meet the needs of the patient population. Develops, implements, and evaluates departmental goals that support the nursing strategic plan in collaboration with the nursing management team and associates. Works collaboratively with the Nursing Executive Leadership to seek and utilize information to develop, implement, and manage a budget which supports organizational objectives, patient care standards and quality of care. Ensures compliance with unit, divisional and hospital policies, procedures, regulatory agencies and takes corrective action when deficiencies occur. Monitors and analyzes departmental performance data, and identifies and participates in performance improvement opportunities. Participates on hospital committees, task forces and projects at the request of the Nursing Executive Leadership. Maintains the ability to deliver direct patient care as required. LEADERSHIP and PROFESSIONALISM Provides clinical leadership through role modeling professional practice behaviors and maintain role accountabilities at the level of the associate. Creates an environment in which professional and personal growth is an expectation. Serves as a change agent, assisting others in understanding the importance, necessity, impact and process of change. Integrates high ethical standards and core values into everyday activities. Serves as a professional role model and mentor to future leaders. Promotes a public image of nursing excellence at the Washington Hospital Center through professional communication, presentations, publications and membership in professional organizations.
