NGMS, the Baltimore/Linthicum location is seeking a Photonics Systems Engineer. The selected Photonics Systems Engineer will perform as a member of an interdisciplinary team of engineers and scientists on different project assignments to develop novel and innovative solutions to advanced technical problems. You will design, develop, build, and test systems and products based on optic, photonic and laser technologies to solve hard problems. You will have the opportunity to work on multiple advanced development systems and to work closely with senior technical leads. Much of the work will be hands-on in a lab environment, but there will be additional work developing and applying mathematical models for simulation and analysis. The successful engineer will contribute to the overall development of photonic and optical systems, including developing and benchmarking system performance models and implementing test procedures. Responsibilities include: Design and analyze photonic components and subsystems Develop test plans and perform testing of optical components and subsystems Contribute to the development of innovative solutions to difficult problems Perform testing on optical assemblies and photonic systems Document designs and test results Future responsibilities are expected to include: Present results to customers Lead teams of engineers and technicians in the pursuit of program goals, and complete tasks according to schedule, budget and design objectives Additional responsibilities include support of proposal teams, and working with customers on product definition This is a Dual Level requisitions, candidates will be considered for both a Technical Level 2 and 3 based on the qualifications listed below Basic Qualifications: BS in Physics, Optics, or Electrical Engineering with 2-4 years' of applicable experience, or 0-1 years' of applicable experience with a MS in Physics, Optics, or Electrical Engineering [T2] BS in Physics, Optics, or Electrical Engineering with 5-8 years' of applicable experience, or 3-6 years' of applicable experience with a MS in Physics, Optics, or Electrical Engineering [T3] Hands-on skills for assembly and testing of photonic designs, including breadboarding, optical receivers, and fiber amplifiers Experience working in an optical lab environment utilizing equipment such as optical spectrum analyzers (OSA), Optical Vector Analyzers (OVA), optical wavelength meters, optical high-speed detectors and high-speed digitizing oscilloscopes Knowledge of LabVIEW, MATLAB and/or Python programming languages Great problem solving and troubleshooting skills. Good verbal and written communications skills for presentation of technical approaches, work performed, results, and findings Secret clearance eligibility, US Citizenship is a pre-requisite Preferred Qualifications: Experience with precision optical, micro-optic and/or fiber optic communication components and verification, eg Bit Error Rate (BER) testing Experience with commercial optical transport products, including 40G/100G coherent systems Understanding of fiber optic transmission, communication theory, advanced optical signal coding and modulation formats, and network architecture Experience with transmission modeling software (such as VPI) Knowledge and experience with fiber optic systems and components, such as lasers, modulators, EDFAs, dispersion compensators, fibers, passive components, receivers, and high-speed optical modules and sub-systems Knowledge of computer instrumentation control. Proficiency in LabVIEW, MATLAB and/or Python programming languages. Eligibility for Top Secret, SAP, and/or SCI access Salary Range: 85764 - 128646 Salary Range 2: 106260 - 159390 Employees may be eligible for a discretionary bonus in addition to base pay. Annual bonuses are designed to reward individual contributions as well as allow employees to share in company results.
