Duties

  • Assists the Inspector General in directing a comprehensive program of criminal and administrative investigations relating to the programs and operations of the Smithsonian Institution.
  • Ensures that the OIG complies with the standards established by the Quality Standards for Investigations issued by the Council of Inspectors General on Integrity and Efficiency (CIGIE) and the Attorney General Guidelines for Offices Of Inspector General With Statutory Law Enforcement Authority.
  • Plans, directs, and executes the investigation program in areas covering such matters as fraud, criminal, and civil violations.
  • Supervises a team of investigators of grades 11-14. Evaluates performance of subordinates and recommends promotions, awards, and other personnel actions; maintains discipline; and identifies training needs.
  • Serves as a senior investigator with responsibility for conducting exceptionally difficult investigations relating to Smithsonian programs and operations.

Qualifications

Specialized Experience:

You qualify for this position if you possess one year of specialized experience equivalent to at least the GS-14 level in the Federal Service or comparable pay band system. For this position specialized experience is defined as conducting sensitive/complex criminal and administrative investigations into fraud/financial/integrity-related offenses.

Experience refers to paid and unpaid experience, including volunteer work done through National Service programs (e.g., Peace Corps, AmeriCorps) and other organizations (e.g., professional; philanthropic; religious; spiritual; community, student, social). Volunteer work helps build critical competencies, knowledge, and skills and can provide valuable training and experience that translates directly to paid employment. You will receive credit for all qualifying experience, including volunteer experience.

Part-time and/or unpaid experience related to this position will be considered to determine the total number of years and months of experience. Be sure to note the number of paid or unpaid hours worked each week.

Conditions of Employment

The Smithsonian Institution has a mandate requiring all employees (federal and trust), affiliated staff (including volunteers, interns, and fellows), and the contractors who work with us to be fully vaccinated against COVID-19 regardless of the employee's duty location or work arrangement (e.g., onsite, telework, remote work, etc.), subject to such exceptions as required by law. The duties of this series require moderate to arduous physical exertion involving walking and standing, use of firearms, and exposure to inclement weather. Manual dexterity with comparatively free motion of finger, wrist, elbow, shoulder, hip, and knee joints is required. Arms, hands, legs, and feet must be sufficiently intact and functioning in order that applicants may perform the duties satisfactorily. Sufficiently good vision in each eye, with or without correction, is required to perform the duties satisfactorily. Near vision, corrective lenses permitted, must be sufficient to read printed material the size of typewritten characters. Hearing loss, as measured by an audiometer, must not exceed 35 decibels at 1000, 2000, and 3000 Hz levels. Since the duties of these positions are exacting and responsible, and involve activities under trying conditions, applicants must possess emotional and mental stability. Any physical condition that would cause the applicant to be a hazard to himself/herself, or others is disqualifying.
