Job Summary Collects, processes, and may draw laboratory specimens. Performs simple routine duties specific to assigned section. Minimum Qualifications Education/Training High school graduation or equivalent; completion of an accredited program for laboratoryassistants or phlebotomy, or 1 year clinical laboratory experience. Experience No experience required with completion of approved laboratory assistant or phlebotomistprogram. License/Certification/Registration No special certification, registration or license required. Knowledge, Skills & Abilities Basic computer skills. Verbal and written communication skills. Primary Duties and Responsibilities Collects specimens as directed and takes them to the laboratory for analysis, using appropriate or specified equipment for collecting and handling specimens. Logs specimens into the laboratory. Bags and files specimens; discards surgical specimens as necessary. Draws blood from patients. Contributes to the achievement of established department goals and objectives and adheres to department policies, procedures, quality standards and safety standards. Complies with governmental and accreditation regulations. Generates and issues various laboratory reports. Generates billing reports, investigates discrepancies, and submits corrections. Maintains a clean, orderly work environment with regard to safety and biohazardous conditions. Reports unsafe or hazardous conditions. Maintains required records, reports, statistics, and files as directed. Orders laboratory supplies and maintains supply inventories as directed. Participates in meetings and on committees and may represent the department and hospital in community outreach efforts as required. Performs and maintains quality control and preventive maintenance of equipment and materials. Takes and records temperature and CO2 concentrations. Calls attention of technologist to out-of-range results. Conducts instrument and refrigerator maintenance checks. Performs other duties as assigned. Performs preliminary setup procedures for specimens. Accessions incoming laboratory specimens, labels, centrifuges, verifies receipt, adds fixatives, pipets, and sorts for lab sections. Assists pathologist, physicians' assistants, and technicians as required. Places orders, cancels tests, and performs inquiries in the LIS. Performs simple laboratory tests such as adding reagents as required and recording results. Prepares and maintains documentation of media with manufacture lot numbers and expiration date. Records and dates supplies as they come in and as they are put to use. Labels preparations appropriately. Ensures proper appearance, depth, and sterility. Screens visitors and telephone calls, takes messages, provides lab results and/or information, and refers calls as necessary.
